I have a dual boot Win ME / Win 2000 system which has been working fine for months. Recently, in Win 2K, Adaptec Direct CD and EZ CD Creator 4 somehow lost the ability to find a CD-RW device(I have a SCSI Yamaha 4416 and an IDE Acer 8x4x32 -- and SCSI Plextor Ultraplex 40). Nero still worked fine, however, and all drives could still be accessed through explorer. Then one day, I lost all 3 CD drives in Explorer. The drives do not even show up. Now I cannot access any CD drives in any program. Device manager shows yellow exclamation marks and states:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drives. Upon reboot, they are detected, drivers are installed, but after second reboot, same errors. All drives work great in Win ME. I have uninstalled Adaptec software. I have also reinstalled Win 2K using the "Repair" option. No luck. I would like to avoid haing to do a "fresh" install, as that would require me to reinstall all of my apps. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Please go the Adaptec Support Knowledge database http://ask.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/tic. Search for the Article 000505-0000. It details how in Windows2000 Professional, the CD-ROM drives can no longer work after Easy CD Creator is uninstalled. There is a registry fix detailed in that article.

Regards,
Edward

Thanks for the reply...I followed your instructions to the letter, and I thought that would be the answer, but unfortunately, did not solve my problem. Not sure what to do now. May just have to reinstall...

After 2 weeks of frustration and a fresh install of Win 2k and all apps, I finally found the solution. It has to do with a conflict between the newest version of Windows Media Player and Direct CD. This is NOT documented on Adaptec's website. There will be a patch available soon. Anyway, just do the following...

Run regedit
Highlight:
HKEY Local machine/System/Current ControlSet/Control/Class/
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Remove the following keys:
Upper Filters
Lower filters

Reboot
You should now have your drives back.

Hope this helps...
