Can't access newly installed drive D in winXP system

This should show up as drive"D".

It's the H/D from my my old win2000 system. It has an active partition...maybe that's the problem .....you can only have 1 active partition?

I can see it in in device manager...working fine.

I can see it in Disk manager where it shows up as dissk 1. but I can't make any changes...the only abvailable option is"delete Partition". I don't wanna do that, I want to read the drive.

I cannot see it in explorer......so I cannot access it to copy r files to my new XP system.

How can I assign it drive D?

Right Click My Computer -> Manage -> Stoarge

its probably a dynamic disk or something of the sort, either way do what bjc112 said it will work.

I had done that; in disk managment the two drives show up with only their (previous) volume name and no drive letter assigned.

Disk Management shows capacity and free space; mentions they are Healthy (Active), but when you right-click all items are greyed-out except delete partition.

The drives don't show up in My Computer.

I assume they need to have a drive letter assigned before I can access the data.

One drive is connected via motherboard, the other is a usb external HD.

Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

Same problem here, You cannot access the drive without a drive letter.


This is so wierd.

I needed to get some data from that drive that was not showing up as D:

So I made a logical partition on my new C drive using Partition Magic. Then I copied the drive (that I could not read) to it with "Copy Drive" in Norton Ghost.

Now I could access/copy the info I needed. from the logical partition D. I could still not read the Win2000 drive that should be showing up as Drive E.

When I powered up the next day my new logical D partition was gone! Well, not gone but it no longer shows up as D. It shows up as "local disk" Healthy (unknown partition).

The other hard drive shows up as "local disk", healthy (active).....same as before.

No drive letters on EITHER ONE. WTF!! Guess I'll have to do the same thing all over to get the rest of my data.

Win XP disk manager is useless in this case.

Help....anyone.

I have the same problem with a drive. When I plug it into a win2k machine, I then can set a drive letter and just copy the data from there.

If you right-click on the part where it says disk 0 or disk 1, do you have a 'write signature' option?

Nop,

that is not an option.....Options ar:

1. Convert to dynamic disk
2. Properties
3. Help

No options are greyed out.

What would a ";write signature option do?"

is grayed out.

I have a 2003 version of Systemworks around; if all else
fails; I'll have to try using ghost to copy like you did.
