ive beeen running the stock cooling and as5 so far and ive gotten stable temps of 40-50c at all times. i want cooler and im thinking of the thermalright xp-120 but i have a Asus P4C800-E Deluxe and on their site it said that i have to tilt the capacitators which im not sure i want to do...with that xp-120 i was thinking of getting a 190 cfm 120mm fan. do you guys have any other suggestions and/or opinions on tilting the caps.

Are you planning on overclocking? Does the stock HSF's noise bother you?

Otherwise I see no reason to spend the money on another HSF. Your temps look fine and as long as it's stable I wouldn't waste the money. Now if you're overclocking that's a completely different story. You might look at the XP-90 if the 120 won't fit on your board.

Unless you plan on overclocking, why bother. The stock HSF is more than adequate.

It will be EXTREMELY noisy but push a lot of air.

Honestly though if you are doing any hardcore OCing with the Intel chip you need watercooling. It goes from stock to water cooling with intel these days. Anything else though better is not worth it.

my advice concerning price and performance is to buy a Zalman CNPS 7000B AL-CU. Excellent cooling results, not too big of size and costs about 30-40 with a fan already included. Also it has a potentiometer included, so u can change the rounds per minute easily. At highest speed u will be able to hear the sound of the fan but its not one of these annyoing sounds, u just hear, that there is a fan blowing air, on medium speed u wont be able to hear it anymore.

Try and find some reviews with across-the-board comparisons with other coolers. Since the Zalman 7000 and 7700 are so (darn) popular, they are often included in good reviews.

There is a new make/model someone e-mailed me -- something called an "arctic Freezer". I found reviews comparing to Zalman 7000 and TR XP90 or XP120, and the ThermalRight XP series still trumps all, even if by only a couple degrees C on the "load" end -- which is what is most important.

As to the XP120 and the P4C800 Asus boards. Yes, you have to bend the capacitors to make it fit, but they wouldn't suggest doing that if there was significant reason to worry. I've bent the connecting wires soldered to the mobo for these capacitors by accident on more than one mobo, and it really shouldn't be a problem. Still, the uncertainty could paralyze you. I was luckier with my P4P800.

For the Prescott 3.2E, you really want an effective and efficient air-cooling solution, although many (and here) note that your temps are satisfactory with the stock cooler. But I've seen posts here and there that the temps can be brought down to the 42 to 47C range at full load, and it always involves a cooler like a ThermalRight XP with a high throughput fan. I saw good load temperatures for an XP90 and Vantec Tornado, but the noise! The Noise!

I'm testing a Delta ". . . -SHE" 120x38mm fan this week which has a throughput of 142 CFM, and a noise-rating in the mid-50's. Ordinarily, this would seem more extreme than the Tornado, but I'm guessing it might be mostly turbulence, which is muffled effectively inside my case. Further, I'm controlling the fan speed through the mobo CPU-FAN header with SpeedFan 4.20, and I believe when I exchange the existing fan with the Delta I can drop the fan speed to the current level below 3,100 rpm, which is almost noise-free. But the Delta should add about 10 CFM to the current throughput. I'll have it spin up to full at the load temperature value.

We have pretty much confirmed that mobo fan-headers on the P4C800 and P4P800 can easily handle the full capacity of all headers combined, but this particular fan has an amperage rating of 0.8 Amp, or 9.6W draw. That is effectively one-third of the fan-header capacity for the entire board.

Listen -- PULL-EEEEZZZ! I have to ask you. What stepping and product code did you get with your 3.2E, and can you confirm that you can unlock the multiplier with the October '04 BIOS revision for the P4C800?

Eventually you will care about the fan noise on the XP90 expecially with a high powered fan; get the Zalman and you can doze at your desktop. I have two of them in two different machines. Both overclock nicely and quietly.

in ur case id say that the xp-120 was an overperformer and its huge. as for the fans to use, i suggest to buy a medium powered fan with about 50-70m³ of air moving. these should cause noise like 20-26db, which is hearable but not noisy. everything under 20db will be super silent. I refer to Papst, Bequiet or Noiseblocker Fans.

agreed. i have my 3.2E @ 3.92 on stock voltage with watercooling. 33C idle, 38C load and it's quiet

Why in gods name did you get a TT??!

They are HORRIBLE compared to THermalright and Zalman. THey aren't even in the same league. THat cooler doesn't cooler worth crap, you would be better off with the stock cooler.

You might take a look at the Arctic-Cooling Freezer 4. I have a P4-3.0E coming and this is the cooler I am going to use. There are a few reviews of it on the web which rate it highly. Here is the LINK.

Forgot to mention that it ships with the ARCTIC MX-1 thermal compound, a higly rated paste.
