Can't delete icons

I have four Icons on my desktop and am unable to delete them. they are from shortcuts my grandson tried to make and they are invalid shortcuts. when I try to delete them I get a message box saying that acces is denied and thay can't be deleted. I using Win XP Pro. any ideas???

Started in safe mode, logged on as administrator and they didn't show up, logged in regular and got the same message.

Each user account has its own desktop screen, perhaps it's on a different user's desktop? C:\Documents and Settings\(usernames)\Desktop.

No joy with move on boot either, oh well , it's about time to nuke the whole thing and do a fresh install.

This may be more work that you want to get into, but you could probably find out what process is grabbing those icons and preventing you from deleting them by using Process Explorer from Sysinternals:

You'll want to go to Find Handle and then type in part of the name of the icon files. This will hopefully return a process that is referencing that icon. You can then kill it (assuming it's SAFE to kill ).

I've never actually tried this in your specific situation but if a process has got a handle on these guys (no pun intended) this will tell you for sure. Otherwise it would have to be a security issue, but if you're admin it shouldn't be, unless there's an implicit deny rights possibly for those files? You might check that if you haven't already. Rebuilding is always a good answer though
