Can't do ANYTHING on this POS CUSL2!

I am EXTREMELY frustrated and annoyed with this POS ASUS CUSL2 motherboard. I installed the new mobo and PIII 700E tonight and have had nothing but problems for the past 5 hours. The stupid thing can't reboot (have to completely shut off power to get it to reboot), randomly doesn't recognize my TNT2 (yes, I disabled onboard VGA), doesn't recognize any of my hardware in Win98se, won't let me upgrade the INF file because it says it's not a supported chipset, and it won't let me install Win2000 as a dual boot (hangs every time). AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! I've installed a number of new mobo/cpu combos with no problems whatsoever - this mobo has got problems.

I'm typing this on my secondary pc, as the primary one can't do anything. What the hell is wrong with this board?

Do a complete format and reinstall of Win98SE.

As soon as installation has finished, install the chipset drivers from here:

Intel i815E Chipset drivers

Once you have done that install the Intel ATA drivers from here:

Intel Ultra ATA Storage Drivers

I assume you have an SBLive? Disable Legacy USB in the BIOS and assign Legacy to IRQ 5 in the BIOS. Make sure you have IRQ sharing with LPT enabled in the SBLive drivers. That will fix your reboot problem.

Try again from there.

It's not a POS....take the time to set it up properly and it will be fine.

remove everythign except the video card, hard drive, ram and cpu and fix things that way, then add the rest of the components one by one. i find that helps fix most problems

Bah! I thought I finally had everything working right, but I guess not. I upgraded my bios to 1002, upgraded the chipset (although, it hung at 90% everytime, I'm going to try again tonight), rearranged my PCI cards, disabled USB legacy support, and reserved IRQ5. This was already a fresh Windows install. Was able to install Win2k as a dual boot, and everything seemed hunky-dory last night.

Well, I shut my pc down when I went to bed last night (trying cut down that $80/mo power bill) and when I went to power it back up this morning I had troubles again. When I first powered up, all I got was gibberish on the screen (bunch of scribbly lines) - this seems to happen everytime I power down for any length of time. Normally, I can just hit reset and it'll boot up normally - not this time. I am now unable to get into Windows at all. The system POSTs and starts loading Windows, but it hangs when it's supposed to show the login dialog box (Win2k). I tried rebooting numerous times, all with the same result. Ugh, this is SO frustrating.

This may be a great board once everything is up and running, but Asus really needs to test their products better before releasing them. I've installed/used/played with a lot of hardware and have never had this many issues before. At this rate, things will never be stable with this mobo...

Any ideas?

Are you running your 700E at default speed?

Maybe you just got a dodgy board....some of those slip through the cracks.....I haven't had any of the problems you describe.....maybe you could exchange it for another.

Yup, running at default speed. The mobo/cpu combo was a gift and was ordered over the internet. Not sure how easy it would be to replace/exchange it...

Go to [l]www.cusl2.com[/l] a guy there had the same boot problem after getting having the system work the night before. I only have a few problems with the motherboard, but I haven't had the chance to iron them out since the Navy thinks I need to go to sea every week or so and when I am at home the wife thinks I need to spend time with her. This is a good board and has a lot of potential. If I were you I would flash back to the 1001a bios. From what I have read it seems to be the most stable. Once you get things right you will love this board.

the cusl2 has had quite a few probs with the 700e from what i've seen. if reinstalling the os, and flashing the bios as well as making sure you have the latest appropriate drivers/firmware doesn't work, you may consider just swapping it out for a new board. be a shame though, it's an excellent board

this is the best board i have owned. (abit bx6v2, be6v2, bh6, bp6, asus p3v4x, gigabyte 440lx board). rock solid. with my p3v4x i was only able to hit 980mhz, but that might have been due to my asus slotket or my method of applying the thermal grease.

my friend had the same problem with his CUSL2 even tho we brought the same board at the same place ... mine is rock solid and able to break the 1gigahertz barrier without a sweat as long as i put some voltage behind it ... while my friend couldnt even get 98 to setup without mindless number of failure ... we just sent the board back for a replacement after hours of frustration ...
