Can't get heatsink off CPU

#1 Don't boot up a modern CPU without a heatsink, not for a few seconds, not even for one second. Most socket A CPUs will die INSTANTLY. Other CPUs may not die, but don't be the guinea pig.

#2 If a heatsink is stuck, twist it a bit to loosen it up.

#3 Since I'm switching around things so much, I use Arctic Alumina or even the cheap white goop because they wipe off so easy.

#4 Long beeps are RAM errors. If CPU was dead, motherboard would not beep. If motherboard beeps, CPU is okay. Somehow the motherboard isn't seeing the RAM properly. Maybe just reseating it, maybe RAM is dead, maybe something wrong with motherboard. Anyways, if it beeps the CPU isn't dead.

Zap...when I take the CPU out and leave the RAM in there are no beeps whatsoever.

strange if it is the RAM...i'll give it one last shot today...AMD has already sent me the new CPU, but will they want it back if my old one actually works?

AMD's sending a replacement CPU that should arrive tomorrow. Since I won't be overclocking I'm sticking with the retail HSF Thermal Pad.

Now I'm paranoid...if any of the thermal compound was to have gotten into the CPU socket on the mobo, would it fry the new CPU?

uh oh...should i rma the motherboard too??? is there even a way to tell if anything got in there...i bet it did
