can't get new P3 processor to work

Currently I'm running a Celeron 466 Overclocked at 553, on a Microstar ms-6309 board. I thought I would step it up a bit and bought a boxed P3 1.2 gig processor. I put it in, turned the machine on, and NOTHING. I even reset the cmos. I put my old processor back in and it works fine. I put the P3 back in a few times and still get nothing. Any advice before I pack it back up and ship it back? I have a feeling that there might be nothing wrong with the new P3. Any help would be great. Thanks

The Pentium III 1.2GHz is a Tualatin processor.

Your motherboard does not support Tualatins, and probably doesn't support Coppermines either. The voltage at which these processors run at are way out of the range of what your motherboard is capable of without modification.

I went to the Microstar site, it states my board will support up to a 1.13 Gz chip, and that it is Tualatin ready, but I guess I can't use the chip I bought....Thanks for the info

Its a bit confusing, but there are MULTIPLE revisioons of the 6309.

Rev5 and Rev2 for example. Only the Rev5 supports Tualatin based processors, and the previous versions (like 4 of them) do not.

From the looks of it (and depending on when you bought it), your Celeron 466 age mobo does NOT support Tualatins.

you might want to try to update your MOBO's BIOS...
my friend was having the same problem w/ a coppermine. and he was finally able to use the new CPU after a BIOS update...
(dunno what revision of his ms-6309 though)..

but be careful and back up your old BIOS before you do it
