Can't get TV to display 1920x1080 through HDMI

I have a 47" 1080P LG LCD TV. And I have a Gateway laptop w HDMI out and GeForce 9800GTS M video card. Laptop's native res is 1920x1200.

Now, when I connect the laptop to the TV, the display automatically resets to 1360x768. When I try to force the resolution to 1920x1080, the display looks smudged on the TV and part of the desktop goes off-screen, as if the TV's resolution was not great enough to fit the the entire 1920x1080 image.

Now, when I use a regular analog computer monitor cable to connect the TV to the laptop, I can get a proper 1920x1080 desktop.

Why does it not work properly through HDMI? I was under the impression that HDMI could carry full 1080P image seeing as it's the proper connection for blu-ray players such as PS3, which output the movies at 1920x1080.

Yeah for whatever reason overscanning is very common for PC-HDMI connection. I know for Sharp you use the "dot to dot" option to get 1:1 mapping, and Samsung it's call "just scan", not sure about LG though

I had to manually add the resolution of 1366 x 768 to output VGA to my 32" LCD from my Nvidia 8800m GS laptop. You might manually add the resolution you're trying to reach?

Did you try to use the TV as a second monitor, or as a mirror of your desktop?

I have a feeling that your onboard graphics can't support the 1920x1200 and also output an extended desktop of 1920x1080

Yes. The TV is set up as second monitor. As I mentioned, I had it set up as second display in both clone view and primary display without the main laptop display on.

Also, seeing as my video card is 9800M GTS, and the laptop's own native resolution is 1920x1200, the video card clearly supports the necessary resolution. This is definitely not the case of video card being unable to push the necessary pixels.

I have a feeling this has something to do with scan and scaling on the HDTV... Where are those options to overscan and 1:1 pixel mapping?

Try the mirror option instead. See if that fixes you. As silly as it sounds, it might be the onboard video firmware limiting you.

You might try messing with your refresh rate. I've had a few problems like blurry text and overscanning on my 32" that changing the refresh has helped.

A quick search at AVSforum shows that LG might have the "just scan" aspect ratio option. Not sure what model you have, check if your tv has that option.
