Hello, I'm trying to install Windows XP on my Maxtor SATA HD on my ASUS A8N.

When I boot up with the WinXP Cd the installation finds the hard drive perfectly. I partition and format it and when it reboots to complete the installation I get a error that it can't load the Operating System.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

Do I need to install a sata driver at the begining of the WinXP installation? (Even tho the install finds the drive fine)

Edit: I fixed it

All I did was move the SATA cable to a different slot on my motherboard =O Guess my mobo's SATA1 is bad =T

Are you sure it's detecting your SATA drive, and not an old standard IDE you've got? I made that mistake once and reformatted one of my data drives. It could be that you're installing on an old drive, but when it boots it goes to the SATA and sees nothing. You *do* need to install the SATA drivers prior to XP installation... at least I always have.

do you have more then 1 HDD in your system? if so you might have to set the HDD boot order manually in the BIOS, i had to do that, didnt need to install any SATA drivers, DFI nf4 ultra infinity

Yes I have a IDE and the SATA drive.. However I physically disconnected my PATA IDE drive and still have problems...

The SATA drive seems to be working fine in Windows (I booted up off the WinXP install on my IDE drive)

I had the same problem and this is how I solved it. It took a while to do figure out the right way, but at last it was all done.

1. Disconnect the IDE HDD cable If you have one. You have to do this.
2. Boot with the XP CD.
3. After you see the setup screen, in the bottom it askes to press F6 to install the scsi/controller drivers. Press F6. You have to do this.
4. When it says to insert the floppy disk, insert the floppy disk with the drivers that you got with your HDD, there is one.
5. After installing them, the XP installation will continue.
6. Once everything is done, connect the IDE drive back.
7. Reboot.

It will boot from your SATA HDD.

Everything will work perfectly, all's well

You don't need to have the drivers installed, espcially if your using SP2. Nvidias SATA controller like Intels supports a compatibility mode where it can act as a ATA controller.

The fact that the XP install can detect and run the installation proves that it has whatever drivers it needs to runn correctly and will continue to use those still you install nvidias drivers (which some will suggest you don't).

Make sure the Boot order for your and Priorities has the SATA drive as first. Also keep the IDE hard drive unplugged. Windows may still see it as the Primary HDD and will write the MBR to that no matter what drive you actually install it on. Infact everyone should probably only O/S with the OS drive hooked up.

Second Topweasel. I did not need to install any SATA drivers when installing xp sp2 on my SATA-2 HDD on an Asus A8N-E.
