I can't get XP to load with my DVD-ROM installed, it just hangs for(ever).

I recently installed a AN35N Ultra 400 Shuttle Mobo.

Previous hardware:
DVD-ROM Artec 16x
Seagate Barracuda 80G
Sapphire 9600XT

It will boot if the DVD is not connected or if I do it in safe mode just not safe mode with networking.

It's always a good idea to format and reinstall after swapping out a motherboard. There can be conflicts with the different chipset drivers, and all kinds of funny errors.

Yeah I second this. You'll have loads of dodgy drivers lying around in the windows directory and it'll stress windows out. Plus any windows install needs to be wiped every year to 18 months to keep it running smooth, I'd say.

Definitely. It seems like these days I seem to reinstall about every six months on my gaming box. The other boxes usually can last 12-18 months, but if you're installing/reinstalling a lot of hardware and software, it definitely takes it's toll on Windows.

Frankly, the reason we've given up on 2000 is because you just change anything. XP, on the other hand, being an upgrade of 98, can see new hardware, including MB stuff. It's best to uninstall things that you intend to change out, like video cards, but if you can't, my experience is that it wll see the new hardware, etc., and be OK.

If it doesn't start with the new M/B, then a repair should be in order.

P.S.

I guess that would be difficult if the CD drive is not available. Can you make the floppies with another machine, or try a different CD drive?

I guess I'm confused about the meaning of this line. Windows XP shares much more with Windows 2000 than Windows 98. Also, Windows 2000 is much more stable after swapping hardware than Windows 98.

I'm guessing that the hardware capabilities of W2K are more akin to NT4's, and barely support PnP, to the extent that W2K lacks the PnP resource-rebalancing features of Win98/98se. Whereas XP has had more of that capability added back in.

Either way though, NT4, W2K, and XP, will all fail to boot following a motherboard transplant, if the boot-time disk-controller drivers are different. Whereas any Win9x can be booted in "safe mode" and the problem corrected. W2K and XP require an overtop re-install, usually, to fix that problem.

Sentinel, if you're still having problems, check your FSB & multiplier. I had someone suggest that to me & it worked for me. For some reason, the Shuttle board had the multiplier set to "auto" & the FSB set to 100mhz. I bumped it up to 166mhz & set the multiplier to 11.
