can't install direct x :( when i try, it goes straight to the it's installed and ready to use screen

Have you tried running \windows\system32\dxdiag.exe? I've never had trouble installing DirectX but that should at least show you the version you have (if any), what files are installed, etc.

What operating system and service pack level are you running?

This could be a result of your hardware acceleration not being on. Right click the desktop, go to properties, settings, advanced, troubleshooting and make sure the slider is all the way to the right.
