I am at witts end and not sure where the issue is.

Just got done putting together a new PC:

Intel i7 2600 k
Asus P8Z68-V LX motherboard
Lancool PC-k57 mid tower gaming case
g.Skill DDR3-1333 (only 4GB as the other module (4GB) wouldn't boot!
XIGMATEK 600W NPR-PC602 power supply
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU cooler
crucial M4 64GB SSD
WD 400 GB Hard drive
CDRW DRIVE (Newegg sale)

Like I said, couldn't boot with two Ram modules so found the one worked.

Next issue was tried to install a copy of Windows 7 but realized I needed a prior OS installed first.

Went for the HD and found it had a copy of XP already installed so took it to another PC and formatted it. Then tried to install a fresh copy of XP only to get the Blue Screen.

Tried again with the SSD and got the blue screen - BOTH times after it loaded the files to start installing XP.

Right now I am simply trying to install XP on the SSD without the WD hard drive installed and still get the blue screen.

This time it says:

Technical Information
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xf78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

I have nothing installed on either of the drives. Zip. And I have tried two copies of XP - Pro and Home - and both get the same blue screens.

This is my first SSD but it also happened with the Western Digital drive too but I believe a different code on the Blue screen...

Suggestions??

Que?

You lost me already. Sorry.

I did find in BIOS a setting for choosing:
Disabled
IDE
AHCI
SATA RAID

I had AHCI checked so I changed to IDE and....

Wait a minute I just got past that and it now is on the Welcome to setup!!!

I will keep you updated.

Yup, AHCI will bluescreen XP every time. (Unless you load drivers for it at the F6 prompt.)

Ditto any version of Windows installed without it.

Okay now I installed a complete XP and cannot get Windows 7 installed. It's on a USB 8GB dongle and was already good on a recent reinstall when my sons PC had to be reinstalled. I have three copies of Windows 7 - two for 64 and one for 32. - but I keep getting told its not a valid Win32 .

More as it develops

you obviously have valid xp license, so I will share this common trick that will save you some time: to use upgrade, you can install windows 7 and then upgrade windows 7 over it.

This.

There are easier ways though I think.
Format HD. Go through Windows 7 setup. Once you get to the box asking for a cd key, you can just leave the serial number box empty during install. It will install windows 7 and give you 30 days to activate windows 7. Once you boot up into windows, you can enter your cd key and it will take it. No need for doing the install and upgrade. Just install once.

Also, the issue you are having right now with the upgrade from XP to windows 7. Are you upgrading from 32-bit windows xp to 64-bit windows 7? Because that is not possible. You have to upgrade from 64-bit windows xp to 64-bit windows 7 or 32-bit windows xp to 32-bit windows 7.

Just do the trick I explained above and in the link I posted.

With a Win7 upgrade disc recently I'm pretty sure I just put the disc in to a machine without an OS installed and it installed/activated just like an OEM one would.

In case anyone is wondering, the machine *had* an OS on it, but on a HDD that was completely disconnected at the time.

This.
Are you upgrading from 32-bit windows xp to 64-bit windows 7? Because that is not possible. You have to upgrade from 64-bit windows xp to 64-bit windows 7 or 32-bit windows xp to 32-bit windows 7.

Well that sucks cause I did install XP and it went through as a 32-bit!

I installed XP on the SSD which was labeled D drive for some reason. I used Acronis to back it up on an external. I am wondering if I clone the SSD to the WD 400GB empty drive (C drive) wipe the SSD and then try to install as you pointed out above.

However, I am still not sure how to get the ISO into a executable so I can install Windows 7??

Thanks to all for your assistance.

You said you have Windows 7 on a bootable USB drive? Use that or burn it to a DVD. Then, boot from the DVD or USB drive and go through the setup as you normally would. You don't run the setup from within Windows. You are installing as a clean install without any previous installation on your hd.

Go into the boot menu or the bios when the PC is starting and change the boot order to USB drive or DVD first and your OS hard drive as second. You press DEL during the POST process when the pc is first turning on to get into the BIOS. Change the boot order, save, and restart. Then you will get the press any key to boot from DVD screen, press a button. The setup will load.

You can use whatever program you want to burn the ISO to a DVD.
To make a bootable USB Windows 7 from an ISO, use this (I think it allows you to burn to a dvd too)...

Thank you all for your input and support.

In my opinion you should re-enable AHCI in the BIOS and edit the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci from 3 to 0.
