Can't Install XP on Asus P8Z68-V

The manual for my new Asus P8Z68-V (i7-2600K) says on page 4-1:
"This motherboard supports Windows XP/ 64-bit XP/ Vista/ 7 / 64-bit 7 operating systems...."

Let's not argue about why I want XP. I need it. I have already tried W7 Pro with XP Mode, but XP Mode cannot run my old program that has run on several direct XP builds in the past.

I have tried two separate XP 32-bit CDs, two different DDR3 sets (Corsair 4GB and Gskill 8GB, both underclocked), two different hard drives (Hitachi 1TB, Western 250 GB), NTFS and exFAT formatting, and several combinations of the above. Every hard drive was freshly formatted every time.

In every attempt, after a few minutes, I get the following:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

"If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

"Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

"Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0x00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

My experience with Asus support is that it is a total waste of time to ask.

Suggestions please.

Go into BIOS, and make sure the disks are set to IDE, and not AHCI.

Thanks for the replies. I have two old programs I can't live without. I have succeeded in running my 1991 DOS program in XP Mode. It's my XP vintage program that's still troublesome.

I'll try a native XP build (still have a spare copy) with a mechanical drive running IDE. That should be considerably faster than my i7-860 with native XP.

Actually I prefer to run my old XP program under W7 Pro 64-bit XP Mode and an SSD. I have already registered this system with W7 Pro 64-bit at Micro$oft. But installing my old XP program under XP Mode also fails so far -- I don't recall the error message during installation of my old XP program.

Is it the same AHCI/IDE problem? If I clone my SSD to a mechanical drive, run the clone under IDE for installing the problem XP program, and if it works, clone back to the SSD to run as AHCI? I have cloned to and from SSDs before without difficulty.

This new system I am trying to get sorted out:
Asus P8Z68-V, i7-2600K, Gskill 8GB 2133, Radeon HD 5670 (I'm not a gamer), Cooler Master 212 Plus, OCZ ModXStream 600, Crucial 256GB SATA 6 SSD.

Oh, I thought we were working on a native XP install. So you have 1 program left that isn't working? The error message would likely be helpful.

I've sometimes seen computers that wouldn't install XP with an older installation disc, but would install fine from an XP-with-Service-Pack-2 CD. Just a thought.

I'm trying BOTH a native XP Pro 32-bit install AND XP Mode under W7 Pro 64-bit.

SUCCESS with the native XP install, after setting the BIOS to IDE. I could live with this. I have not yet registered the XP with Big Brother Bill.

But, since I have already registered the W7 Pro (in order to get XP Mode), and I have an SSD, I would prefer to run my two old programs in W7 XP Mode. As I indicated, my 1991 DOS program is working in XP Mode.

When I try to install the XP era program using BIOS setting IDE and a WD 1TB mechanical drive, (same result for BIOS setting AHCI with SSD),
I get the following error:

ComponentMoveData Error Information
Component: SelfReg Component
File: [this field is empty]
Error Number: -2147418113

I believe the installation stops at a file named CLInet.dll

Any hope?

yep, or learn how to slipstream AHCI drivers into installation CD :
http://www.nliteos.com/
I installed XP on my Gigabyte Z68 after slipstreaming SP3 and the Intel AHCI drivers onto the XP disk. When slipstreaming the drivers, I pointed to the correct directory, which gave me a big list to choose from. The correct one for the Intel Z68 chipset is: Intel Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA AHCI controller. Choose only this one when slipstreaming. I used a program called "nLite" to build the slipstreamed copy. Worked fine.

You don't say which version of XP you are using. If it is pre SP2, you will need to slipstream at least SP2 onto the disk. The original release of XP has a rather small limit on hard drive size.

I succeeded with a native XP SP3 32-bit install on a mechanical hard drive, simply by switching to IDE in the BIOS. Thanks, postmoremIA.

I would prefer to use W7 Pro XP Mode, but that is not yet working for my old XP program, as I described in my last post.

This is EXACTLY what I did for the machine I'm building for my wife this week, which has an Asus P8H67-m Pro/CSM and WD Black 750. I even changed up nLite settings and burned more CDRs, tweaked the BIOS, switched the cable from SATA6 to SATA3, and a couple of other things...as long as the BIOS was set to AHCI, the dreaded 0x7B BSOD always came up during Windows loading.

It worked on the very first try when I was setting up my Smackover mobo a few years ago, so I was at my wits end. Finally gave up and switched to IDE and installed again.

Then I did some searching around and found a lot of bogus instructions or very involved hacks to switch to AHCI. But then I ran into this late last night: http://blog.mytwocents.it/?p=11. And I said to myself, "Self, could it actually be this simple?"

It was. Now the machine is in AHCI mode. Took less than 10 minutes, and that includes reboot time.

Note that the author of the blog post does something that may throw you off and result in failure: he highlights too much text in RED, and you may assume you need to copy-n-paste what is in your iaAhci.inf file over the entire section depicted in RED. In reality, you only need to replace the bolded section here dev_2829&cc_0106 with what you find in your iaAhci.inf file. The author even states, "You should change only the DEV_ value", but that's certainly not obvious when you're looking at what is highlighted in RED to be replaced.

Would this work for AsRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3? I am planning on purchasing this board really soon and I want to make sure it works in AHCI mode for Win XP SP2.

Also, where exactly can I download the correct driver to slipstream into my xp disk? (SATA AHCI Controller for Z68 chipset)- I know its on the intel download site but I dont know which which page/exact driver/link to download

Would really appreciate the help, thanks
