Can't overclock my Asus A8N-E mobo at all - very odd...

Ok, I have an Asus A8N-E motherboard revision 2.00 and my processor is Venice Rev E3. The bios is 1005. I have not tried any beta bios'es yet. CPU-z reports the chipset as nForce 4 Rev A3.

Also have a SLI version and it works and overclocks great and the boards are very similar so I"m familiar with it. Somehow, this A8N-E board won't overclock at all!

CPU-Z shows the processor is slightly overclocked at 1813mhz and multiplier of 9x HTT at 201.5

Now, the HTT is running very low, should be at 1000mhz. No matter what I set the FSB at, the cpu still stays at this same speed.

I've already tried clearing the bois and then changing my settings back. I've tried setting the HTT speed in the bios to 2x, 3x, 4x, and auto, to no avail, as many others in the forums have encountered, but mines is locked at 201.5mhz! Tried retarded things like changing memory speeds, voltages, etc but nothing does anything!

Is there some retarded jumper that controls or locks overclocking? In my previous experience, if this jumper was moved to lock, the bios would grey out the settings so you can't use it.

Even so, it should overclock when I set the FSB, then crash or do whatever it wants. The thing is it's reporting the processor as XXXX speed in the bios but in windows, it sits at default speed.

baffling to say the least.

Wookie, thanks for the link, i'll check it out and let you know.

let us know how it goes.

Ok, read it and scanned through a few posts but.... I've already know most of what was in the guide. The problem is I can't even get it to OC. No matter what settings I set it to, it will reflect in the bios, but when windows loads, it is reported to run at default speeds with both cpu-z and wcpuid, even the real-time mhz checker.

It just doesn't make any sense right now

Ssame issues here... I can only get a O/C when I use either AIBooster or NOS. But setting things manually doesn't overclock my system at all.

Problems with locks shouldn't crop up until at least 215-220mhz. You've got something else going on. List your full system specs and settings you've tried or you won't get many helpful answers. " I can't overclock, whats wrong?" doesn't cut it.

I have the exact same problem, windows doesnt seem to recognise the change in HTT frequency made in the bios, and the HTT shown in windows by cpuz is always 201.5

Here are my specs:
3200+ Venice
A8N-E rev 2.0, using bios 1007-002 (updated to 1007 from 1005 trying to remedy this problem)
2x512 corsair value select pc3200
xfx geforce 6800gt
western digital 120 GB SATA hard drive
power supply: coolemaster RS-450-ACLX

OS: Windows XP Pro x64

let me know if you need more information... i am kinda stumped here

Ditto that here... I think something's weird... the BIOS knows it's overclocking, but when windows loads up, it goes back to normal speed... Can't figure it out. I'm using a a8n-e bios 1006 with an Athlon X2 4200+... Guess I can try AI Booster, but I'd prefer to use the BIOS.

I too have this problem. No matter what i change HTT frequency to in BIOS, Windows won't recognize the changes i made but still show 201.5Mhz HTT. At boot time (before Windows starts) i always see the correct frequencies.

Is there noone with a solution available yet? Im trying to contact ASUS by mail and see what they say.

Asus A8n-e, bios 1008
AMD 64 3500+, E6-stepping
Gigabyte GeForce 6600

All you A8N-E owners with frustrating oc results read my thread under motherboard
forum titled as oc'ing a8n-e and see the real potential of this mobo!

My problem isn't really not beeing able to overclock, I can do that just fine once I'm inside Windows with AI Booster. The problem is that when i change HTT frequency in BIOS it won't stick in Windows, which instead uses the default of 201.5Mhz. I wan't this set in BIOS once and for all not having to use some prog inside Windows to do it.

stupid idea but doesn't cool 'n' quiet reverse overclocks once loaded in windows?

Just OC'ed mine this week:

V2 1008 BIOS
3000 Winny
Corsair Value 1GB (This blows btw)
Zalman fanless northbridge cooler

I managed to get 2300 and 210 on the mem. I'm going for silence so my 5v fan couldn't handle much more. I found if you try and change the settings and save inside the same screen it will revert. I had to go out to the actual save and exit setting to get anything to stick.

BTW - I can't get the PCI lock to work either. I set it for 33 and it keeps going up with every FSB boost. Very odd.

Cool'n'Quiet lowers the multiplier but it doesn't lower the HTT speed. For instance, my CPU-Z reports HTT at 220, multiplier x5 and core speed 1100. My system is overclocked but Cool'n'Quiet is currently underclocking it by cutting the multiplier in half.

I have an A8N-E with 1008 BIOS and I just overclocked mine using the "AI Overclock" setting in the BIOS and setting it to 10% overclock. Why don't you guys try that?

I finally found the solution to the problem.

Found it in asus forum for the motherboard.
http://vip.asus.com/forum/bbs.aspx?board_id=1&SLanguage=en-us

How illogicall as it may be the solution is to enable the floppydisc even thogh you havent got one!!! I also disabled the asus my logo thingy.

Remember to move the sata harddiscs to port 3/4 if you encounter any problems before HTT 250.

I got up to HTT 280 stable. Then I was held back by the motherbord, but I think 2520 is ok with a A64 3000.

By the way I overclocked in bios, didnt really work to good in AI booster.

Another solution I saw in a forum was to update the bios in dos, seem to help a few. But it might be that they forgot the HDD.

Worked for me anyway...

Whew! Must be the luck of the draw. My board is a revision 2.00. I updated my bios to 1005 through windows update and overclocked my CPU to 2.6GHz without any problems. I also use port #1. Very stable, no errors using prime95 for 24hrs.

I never installed AIBooster, NOS, Nvidia firewall, asus logo or cool 'n' quiet to begin with. Perhaps this made a difference.

I also stumbled upon that same solution, I upgraded BIOS to version 1009 beta in which I noticed I couldn't disable my floppy drive anymore but overclocking finally works.
