I'm trying to over clock my P4 2.4gig to something a lil higher to 3gigs

My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 using 2 x 256MB DDR (runnin @ 400m/hz) with dual data crap. I've also got a Powercolor Radeon 9600 Pro Ultra.

But every time i try to bring up my clock speed to more than, just say, 208 or so (200 is the default), i don't even get into BIOS and have to flash my CMOS to reset the settings. The computer starts (all the lil hard drives spin up and such), however all i get is a black screen.

Even when i set the memory multiplier down to 1.66 (default is 2.00) it still happens.. so i'm thinkin it's not my memory. Is there a component in my computer that's bogus for OCin? such as my mobo or video card...??

1: I would blame the motherboard 1st. Gigabyte are more towards stable and fast stock speeds rather than providing good overclocking ability.

2: Videocard has nothing to do with the overclock UNLESS, your motherboard doesn't lock the AGP and PCI speeds @ (66/33) That could be a problem.

3: It's probably either a not-so-good OC CPU or RAM issue.

Lock the AGP/pci
Up the ram voltage.
What ram? If it is crappy ram you may as well go ahead and change to 5:4 if the above options don't help.

A "lil higher"??? From 2.4 to 3.0 is 25% higher. That is a WHOLE lot more that a "lil higher". 5% is a little higher. 10% MIGHT even qualify. But not 25%. That is a LOT higher. Of course, I remember my old Celery. I had that thing OCed by 55% for over 2 years with no issues. That thing kicked but for Quake I...

Good luck getting your system OCed. It is a lot of fun wringing more out of it than it is rated at.

Hi. I just created a similar problem
I accidentaly set the clockspeed on gigabyte 7DXE mobo to something greater than the default.
I now get no POST and just a black screeen as you did.

How do I fix this? How do I reset the bios to default so it will work?
You mentioned 'flash the cmos'. How do I do that?

Please help! Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

If you have your mobo manual, there should be a page listing the cmos settings and showing where it's located on the mobo. If you don't have the manual, just look around on the board, there should be a jumper on 2 of 3 pins with a cmos label somewhere nearby. Shorting 2 of the pins resets the bios to defaults, shorting the other 2 pins saves changes you make in the bios.
