Can't ping other comp in LAN ive tried everything HELP!!!

Hi,

since my computer guy took my comp away to format it (my dad doesn't like me touching comp after my overclocking experiments went wrong a while ago ) i can't seem to get our LAN to work again...and neither can he. I like to think that I know a good deal about LANs but just can't seem to make it work.

This is my setup: DSL --> main comp nic1 | main comp nic2 --> hub --> my comp

My computer shows up alright in the hub. The ips are manually configured to 192.168.0.1 (main comp) and 192.168.0.2 (my comp) and tha mask is 255.255.255.0 for both. There are no DNS or gateway settings on my comp.

I've tried everything from changing nics to rewiring cables to changing the ip and workgroup and they just won't ping eachother... help!! i'm desperate... need internet sharing...

any suggestions?

What's the third IP address? Which NIC on the first computer is 192.168.0.1?

The usual setup would be to have NIC1 on the main computer on one address block, connecting to the cable modem/router.

Nic2 on the main computer has to be on a different address block, and the same network address block of the computers behind it. For local communication, the default gateway isn't used, but you do need a DNS if you're trying to ping with a name (instead of an IP address).

So, if NIC1 on the main computer is on 192.168.0.1 with a mask of 255.255.255.0, the second NIC should be on a different network address (like 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0) and the computer that NIC 2 is atached to (through the hub/switch) should also be on the same address block (ex: 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0). The default gateway for the second computer would be 192.168.1.1, and DNS should be the same setting as the first machine (whatever the ISP assigned).

Also check your cabling.

thing is ive always had nic1 200.183.55.219 (my fixed adsl ip) and nic2 192.168.0.1 so theyre both different anyways...

it can't be the cabling cuz it was workin before the comp guy took the comp away...

and the gateway for the second comp is the LAN ip of the first...



any other suggestions?

So you definitely have a physical link between the two pcs?
(green lights on all hubs and NICs involved?

What OS are you running?

yep all nic lights are on and hub lights too...

win98se on mine and winxp on the server...

Try pinging 127.0.0.1 on each computer. If that answers, the software is installed and active.
Then try pinging the 192.168.0.1 or 2 on address of the machine you are on. if they are connecte to a hub / switch and are communicating, they should answer their own pings. Ods are one of the 2 will not work.

Tell us what happened.

What I ended up doing was buy a router and just finshed setting it up 5 mins ago... it's all good!
