Okay, I got a gigabyte mobo 965P, with the e6300 conroe. I got 2GB of RAM.

I can't get the damn thing on. I unplugged EVERYTHING, plugged in a video card (X300 i ahd lying around, no fan, no power connector) and unplugged hard drives and everything. The monitor doesnt turn on, nada. The fan on the CPU spins but other than that, nothing. It's being powered by an Antec 430w TruePower 2.0 power supply.

Help me out folks. I took the PSU out of the box, and plugged it in... nada.

What do you guys think? Give me some ideas here... everything is new minus teh PSU, but I know that works because my brother's PSU does the same thing.

Intel hyping up CPUs and shipping out fakes?

Make sure you got the ram and all of the power connections to the motherboard.

I took the motherboard out of the case, just hooked up RAM, video, and PSU -- nothing else. I am starting the motherboard using a screwdriver and it seems to spin up slowly.. I am going to best buy to get another PSU and see if that takes care of it. If not, then I am out of ideas. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Are you sure the bios on the board is conroe compatible? Check the rev# on the bios chip on the mobo, then go the the gigabyte website and find out what rev is need to support conroe. If the bios on the board doesn't support conroe it will cause the "no post" situation that you describe

It says on the box that it's Core 2 Duo compatible.

I just went and bought a new power supply to see if something is really screwy, but nothing... no screen coming up.

GAHHHHHHHH I NEED A PC!!

Here is my build:

ntel® Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe Processor 1.86GHz, 1066FSB, LGA775, 2MB Cache Retail
OCZ OCZ26672048ELDCGE-K 2GB Kit DDR2-667 PC2-5400 Gold Edition Enhanced Latency Dual Channel Memory Retail
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 P965 Express Core 2 Extreme/Core 2 Duo 1066FSB LGA775 DDR2 ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA Retail
Sapphire X1900XT 512MB
Antec 550 Neo HE (brand new today)

Okay so here is what I did... I took EVERYTHING out of my case, and plugged in my motherboard, 1 stick of RAM (each independantly), and my video card. I plugged in the 12V rail and motherboard power, then used a screwdriver to turn the PC on. NOTHING!

I swapped video cards to an X300 PCI-E I had lying around -- NOTHING. Same thing for the 6800GT OC I have -- NOTHING!

I am really frustrated and wanted to put my PC together today.... and I've built a zillion before so I can't think what's wrong

Please help

Hmm....try reseating your CPU. Does the motherboard even POST? How far do the diagnostic lights get or what code do they get to? (if there are any)

check your connections again.

fan headers all connected such as the cpu fan header/rpm monitor?

front I/O of case all connected to the headers?

how many connections from psu to the motherboard for this DS3? do you have a native 24-pin psu?

Okay here's the update....

as I said, the motherboard is sitting on my desk with a PSU connected, graphics card and RAM. This is the same setup.

The motherboard does *not* post. The PSU is brand spanking new -- it's got 12v rails (2 of them!) plus PCI-E connections and all that. It's native 24 pin.

I have tried reseating the CPU to no avail... I cannot figure out for the life of me what is wrong. No beep codes, nothing. If I turn the power on, it is kind of weird... the fan on the CPU spins for a second, then stops. The graphics card starts for a second then stops. Then it turns on again and goes full blast! If I hold down power for 5 seconds, it turns off.

Any other ideas guys?

Thanks a lot!

Update again... now something else weird is happening. I short the jumpers for power, and the power keeps cycling. Like, the PC turns on, turns off, turns on, turns off, etc etc...

I am going to call Gigabyte tomorrow to see what's up with this crap

*cries*

Sounds like you got the old revision of the Antec NEO HE. People have the same exact problem you have described. Search and you find out more about it.

That board has an issue with [some?] CL4 memory; it misreads the SPD information and attempts to set the memory to CL3. Most memory then fails to work.

Some users have apparently had luck throwing in a non-CL4 stick, setting up RAM timings (slow ones), then dropping in the new memory and readjusting to correct timings.

That's not to say there are no other possible issues, but this is one worth a look.

The search on this forum sucks monkey balls... can you fill me in, and also tell me what PSU to buy instead? Just take a look at my config and figure I don't OC.

Thank you for that.... bit the bullet and bought the Seasonic 600w PSU.

That will cover my power needs for years to come. I'll take the Antec 550HE back to Best Buy (I bought it as a test unit... but I guess antec sucks the big one nowadays).

Hope this solves it all.

I know I'll get flamed for even mentioning it, but a PC Power & Cooling unit (such as the 510W-SLI) is really the best choice.

That said, the Seasonic 600 isn't a terrible call.

This same exact thing has happend to me before. I'm pretty sure you have a faulty motherboard. To make sure I had a faulty motherboard, I borrowed a friend's video card to see if it would post, but alas it had the same problem, the fans would spin, there was power, but the monitor wouldn't turn on. It turned out to be my motherboard.

I agree... I worked at a computer store recently and there was a guy that brought in a system that was doing the exact types of things you describe. The motherboard was replaced and the system worked again... I had something similar happen, and it was the PSU... The main difference is if it's the PSU usually it won't power the LED power lights on the front of your case or it'll smoke your HDDs. On a different system, I also built an Athlon 700, a while back, that required a 300W power supply and I didn't know this and had a 235 Watter and smoked a couple of boards before I upgraded the PSU. Those ones would boot up into windows and then reset then not POST. Worked perfectly with a 300W Sparkle (after a couple of mobo RMAs *_*)... Well, like they say, Live and Learn.

Okay i have a stick of DDR2-533MHZ-CL4 memory I'm going to try. I ripped it out of a Dell machine so ideally it will work in this system as well.... I guess we'll see.

I have a very similar system... E6300, Gigabyte DS3, 2x1024 G.skill ddr2, nVidia 7300LE, 2x250gb Western Digital SATA HD's. Antec NSK4400 case with included 380w psu, and included 120mm rear fan.

I turned it on (no monitor, just seeing if it powers), and it started and stopped like 3 times in a row, about 4 seconds each attempt, until finally it got going and was running for several minutes before I turned it off.

I hope today it just goes on well. And I'll also connect a monitor to see what the post looks like.
