Hiya,

I'm having a recent problem with my system on a W7 build. It will wake from a general sleep mode when the system turns off after 30 minutes and/or if I go ahead and put it in sleep mode. However, just recently, when I get up in the morning (system stays on 24/7 basically) it will not wake. Not from the mouse, not from any keyboard stuff, not ctrl/alt/del. Nothing. I can't even cold boot it. It's been now that I have to sneak behind the machine and cut off my PSU power. But now that has stopped working too.

I now have to pull the battery and reset the CMOS, etc.

So I don't know whether that is sleep or hibernate but that's the trouble. Are there mobo/OS settings that I should be checking first? Thanks.

I'm just going to toss ideas out, but if you shut down the computer overnight instead of letting it sleep, does it start just fine?

My initial step might be to test your normal usage with a different power supply.

It is NOT the PSU!!

I never let my PC's hibernate or sleep.. I went into the screensaver section and went to change the power settings: Set everything to never: Once I did that I never had any more trouble..

W7 has some different power management features that you can access from the screensaver window. I believe one of them disables USB when your computer goes into sleep. Try disabling that.

Yeah, that might just fix it.. I think its 'USB suspend' in the power manager

Thanks.

You know what's weird, is I went into the Bios and messed w/ S1 and S3 and it's not doing it now. I think I made S1. Whats the difference between these two? What's the difference between Sleep vs. hibernate?

I'm into the screen saver options on W7 and I don't see many options. Where are you guys looking? Like, there's nothing to change to "disable USB"....

Personalize > Screensaver > Change Power Settings > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > USB Selective Suspend

The difference between sleep and hibernate is the when your computer sleeps, it is going into low power state that shuts off hard disks and certain other non-essential computer components and services. When it hibernates, your computer's memory is saved to the hard disk and your computer basically is shut down entirely. When it comes out of hibernation it simply loads that info back into the memory and resumes operation.

sorry im bringing this thread up from the dead but felt it was better to search before starting a new thread, but im having problems with sleep mode as well. i never use it and just turn the computer off normally but i accidently hit sleep and i couldnt stop it, and i tried to wake up the computer and the keyboard/mouse and monitor recieve no signal but my case lights and fan controller are still active and the video card fan is stuck at 100%. do you think my only solution is to remove the cmos battery? or if i just let it sit for a while it will reset its self?

edit: forgot to mention im using win7 ultimate x64, on a p5ql prow/ q6600 @ stock. 4gb, 8800gts with the current drivers.

I have a similar problem. My desktop won't come out of Standby or Sleep, or what ever mode it's in after 24 hours. I have checked the BIOS of my P5N73-AM (bios 0501) and there is no ACPI 'enabled/disabled' setting, just S1 or S3 or both. I've tried S1, and S3 settings and it still won't resume without hitting the "reset" button. It is XP Home SP3, Power option is set to "always on", as there are apps that run in the backround. If I hit spacebar or jiggle mouse every 4 or 5 hours it resumes okay; but it is quiet for more than 20 hours it won't resume without a quick reset. It actually goes thru a reboot. I read somewhere that SP3 has had a hand in causing this problem. Can anyone confirm that or make any other suggestion?

Update: Thought it might be because in some of the sleep modes there is no power to periferals. I use a USB Mouse & Keybd. Now it's stuck again in sleep/standby/hibernate (?), but there is still power to the Keybd ? Next (after I reboot) will be to check video drivers and maybe try to rollback to SP2.

By Jove I think I have it. I read in another forum about undervoltaged RAM modules. 1.8v modules are not really stable, but can be made more efficient if the voltage is bumped to 1.9v. I tried this by uping the voltage by 100 mv. (or .1v) in BIOS and voila it is stable for the past 24 hours, and will come out of sleep/standby/hibernate instantly.

Unstable RAM could do that. You might want to run Memtest86+ on the memory to see if it actuallly is stable.
