Here's a better explanation of who these folks are, from an E-mail received on 5/26/01.
----------------------------------------------------------
Hello friends,
My name is Leonard Bogle. I am the VP of Sales and
Marketing for Capacity Calibration (CapCal), a
subsidiary of Distributed Computing, Inc. I am writing
to you because you are a member of the ProcessTree
network and, as such, you have an interest in having
your computer ?start paying for itself.?
You probably saw the last newsletter from Distributed
Science and therefore know that, unfortunately, they are
going out of business. Please read the note at the end
of this letter for a further communication from Distributed Science.
I?m writing to offer you the opportunity to make money
from your computer while you are not using it, like
Distributed Science offered. However, our offer is a bit
different, so please allow me to explain.
Like Distributed Science, we believe that great humanitarian
projects can be undertaken by linking computers around the
world into a giant network capable of massive computational
and functional tasks. We believe that critical medical,
technological, social and economic progress can be made
much quicker with this massive computing power, similar to
what is now being accomplished by the SETI@home project
(
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/). You may know that
this remarkable project, through a strictly volunteer base
of 2.8 million users like yourself around the globe, has
created the world?s largest super computer?a pretty
fascinating accomplishment!
Our approach is different from Distributed Science in that
we recognize that we must first identify and capitalize on
money-making applications for this valuable technology.
This will then afford us the revenue to explore and develop
the expensive research and technology required to tackle
the more intriguing humanitarian projects. To be sure, we
are a for-profit corporation, but with a higher vision for the
fruits of our success.
For now we are focusing on a high-demand niche in the
Web Infrastructure industry called Web Load Testing. We
have invested over a million dollars in a technology that
automatically helps Web site developers and owners
determine how many users can visit their sites at the same
time. Have you ever waited too long for a page to load on
your favorite site? Well, the ?World Wide Wait? (WWW!) is
about to get shorter for sites certified by the CapCal
technology. With the growth in e-commerce, you can see
that we are headed in the right direction.
Here?s the deal:
If you have a DSL or cable modem Internet connection and
your operating system is Windows 98, Windows ME, or
Windows 2000, we will pay you either $10 per month or
$0.30 per hour for every hour your machine is used, which
ever is greater.
Note: If you have Windows NT and would like to participate in
our program, send an email to mailto:rguilfoyle@capcal.com
and ask to be notified when the next release of our agent is
available (in about 2 weeks). This release will support Windows NT.
CapCal?s non-intrusive agent program runs in the background
and will not interfere with normal use of your computer, and is
completely secure. Further, we have a strict privacy policy and
will not sell, give away or rent your name or email address to any
other party without your permission.
You will receive a $10 activation fee* plus $10 a month or $0.30 per
hour, whichever is greater. To qualify for payment, simply leave your
computer on and available for our use an average of 10 hours a day,
7 days a week.
When payments based on usage exceed $10, you will receive the
larger amount. For example:
*****40 hours/mo (80 minutes/day)$12
*****60 hours/mo (2 hours/day) $18
*****120 hours/mo (4 hours/day)$36
*****240 hours/mo (8 hours/day)$72
*****360 hours/mo (12 hours/day)$108
Like Distributed Science, CapCal uses the PayPal online payment
system to transfer payments to our network member?s accounts.
If you don?t already have a PayPal account, it?s free, secure and very
easy to set up. Just go to
www.paypal.com and follow the instructions there.
To learn more about the CapCal agent program and to sign-up and
download our agent, go to:

In summary, if you:
*Would like to participate in the most exciting use of computers
that can revolutionize technology, research and humanitarian projects around the
globe?
*Have an ?always on? Internet connection like DSL or cable-modem?
*Can make your computer available an average of 10 hours
a day, 7 days a week?
*Have or will setup a PayPal account by going to
www.paypal.com
CapCal will be greatly appreciative and pay you a $10 activation fee
and at least $10 per month just for running the CapCal agent on your
computer and allowing us to use the unused capacity of your computer.
*Note: The activation fee will be paid after your computer has been
active on our network for one week, so that we can verify its availability.
You will receive an email when you have qualified to receive the
activation fee. When you receive this email, please reply to
mailto:rguilfoyle@capcal.com with your PayPal account information.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to having you as
new members of our global alliance to change the face of computing!
Best regards,
Leonard Bogle

Following is a letter concerning this from Distributed Science:

ProcessTree Supplier Request
Dear ProcessTree supplier,
As you have learned from our recent newsletter, we are in the
process of evaluating the sale of our network and technology to another company.
To facilitate that, the potential buyer requires a test of the performance
of the network. You are matching the requirements for this test and we
would like to invite you to participate in it.
Should the potential buyer be satisfied with the evaluation, he will
be offering paid work to those deemed suitable for the purpose of
network load testing and other projects.
Should you be interested in receiving paid work, participating in the
test would be a good way to position yourself at the front of the line
for these projects.
We hope you are willing to help us to get the sale over quick and
smoothly so you and other suppliers can make some money with the new owners.
Kind regards,
Chris Harrison
