Any comic book fans please tell me how strong or significant she is in comics?

I had never heard of her before. And she doesn't seem particularly strong. What's her strength? generic leadership? Female Capt America?

I collected mostly DC as a kid, so I'll leave it to the more marvel fanclub, but the description of her abilities would have her on par with anyone transferred to film so far.

From what I heard, she wasn’t very popular with many comic fans. (ie years back, some people would dress in as Rocket and Groot in comic conventions before GotG movies, but have you ever seen anyone wearing a Captain Marvel shirt?)

Her powers are the result of being fuzed with Kree DNA via the Mar-Vel character (but why that makes her more powerful than the other Kree??)
Sometimes she beats the “all-powerful champion”, while other times loses to weak opponents.

Captain Marvel has been an easy plot device to get lazy writers out of jams by using previously unheard of powers.

Do you remember the comic book version of Rogue where she had super strength, could fly, and kick butt? She basically killed Ms Marvel and permanently absorbed those powers from her. So, she's kind of like Super Girl but arguably less powerful. The Ms Marvel name has also been reincarnated 4 times in the Marvel universe. The last time she was a young Muslim girl.

I just watched the trailer.

Holy hell, nothing was interesting in that clip. So it looks like they'll transport her via time travel to present day from 90s? Don't you have a better use for time travel to neutralize Thanos' threat?

So why is she such a big deal to dedicate a solo movie for it? She just seems boring and vanilla as fack. At least bland ass Capt America got a cool shield. Capt Marvel got... nothing.

There must be fackton of better interesting young strong woman superheroes in MCU.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they needed an epic character that wasn't owned by Sony, Universal, or Fox.

I think there's perhaps a few things going on here:
  • Marvel didn't have access to mutants or the Fantastic Four when this was planned so using Captain/Ms. Marvel gave them an essentially blank canvas to work with as a character.
  • She spends a lot of time in space so they can explain away why she hadn't been around for any other events in the MCU.
  • She is working for the Kree, who are loosely allied with Thanos (Ronan from GotG was Kree). This allows them to bring in a character that many are speculating could be the "Thanos buster" by essentially saying she was on Thanos's side so he never considered her a threat.
  • She seems to be taking the place of Nova as the Super Powerful Space Person since he was never used in the MCU and Xandar has now been destroyed.

It looked like a generic "super hero" movie. What made the Avengers "cool" was the personally of the actors. I have no baseline here so it's hard to buy into it.

I'm sure I'm years late in asking this, but why does movie trailer music always have to be so serious? Especially in a comic-book movie, you'd think they'd go for something a bit more upbeat because you know there will be so many jokes scattered throughout the entire movie it could be categorized as a comedy. Hell, she crashed into a Blockbuster Video.

This is the exact phrase uttered by every comic-book fan and non-fan when that loser "Iron Man" was going to get his own movie out of nowhere, from some know-nothing upstart studio called "Marvel Studios" that hadn't yet produced its own product.

lol

I probably won't go see it. I'll watch when it hits Blue-Ray or 4K. Its just smells of a movie that will spend the first 1 hour and 30 mins telling her story before any action takes place.

I was stoked for iron man. Even I recognized him from avengers beat em up game in 90s in korea. And marvel vs capcom 3 (although it was war machine).

Iron man screams appeal to any kid who sees him at a glance- a flying mecha suit armor with rockets, lasers, and that bad ass mask.

I had never heard of Capt marvel nor saw them in any games or anywhere outside of comic books.

And her design tells nothing about her at a glance. I was like, what does she do?

so, you actually weren't paying attention to the public reaction when the Iron Man movie was announced?

LoL--the character was then and still is a bit of a joke. It was an after-thought in the entire Marvel universe. I understand your argument that the design appeals to certain kids in cultures that worship robot-people heroes, but he was, literally, the most garbage, tossed-aside goon of the Marvel Universe (OK, there were and are some serious garbage street heroes, but when it comes to those Avengers or whatever, Iron Man would be the first to die...especially against real badasses like Thanos. Dude wouldn't even be allowed to plan anything to any kind of shit that mattered on that scale)

Anyhoo, the only reason Iron Man exists in the MCU is business: Marvel sold all of their good properties: Spider-Man and X-Men and FF. By then, all they had was Captain America/ (lol--wtf? what a stupid-ass name) and some Iron Man dude that no one really heard of...OK, outside of your Capcom game--yes, I was familiar with this game, but only because like everyone else, I always played X-MEN characters and MAGNETO when possible. Avengers are garbage. Everyone knows that shit. Marvel had no choice and gambled hard on making their only desperate move to save and restore their identity by building around a roundly pissant loser of a no-name hero called Iron Man (consider that characters like Batman and Superman have culture presence and acceptance...a near-century of relevance in the public mind...Iron Man? lol). That is actually cool, and respect for it for Marvel, because the gamble obviously = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. So, yeah. baller.

The fact remains that no one gave a fuck about an unknown "Iron Man" at the time, so I remain confused why you are complaining about Capt Marvel when the same business issues complicate Marvel's story (they only recently re-acquired Silver Surfer--the only hero, next to Dr Strange, really, capable of providing any real competition against Thanos...pre--IG, anyway...but regardless, too late to weave him in to the story). So: Capt Marvel, a property they have actually been working on for about 2 decades, IIRC. (the modern version, anyway)

Trailer release

OK,. only now watched this trailer. Doesn't look awful...basically like all the other movies, so meh? The jump back a few decades to introduce an origin and establish some character, suddenly in this universe, to fix the mess that it is in....ugh.

I did see Nova Corps and, I'm guessing, the Nova character. hmmm.

Carol Danvers is hott.

Happy friday everyone and Zinny.

Interesting you took it as 'kids in certain cultures that worship robot people heroes'. Korea doesn't specifically worship robot gundam stuff as a general affinity. I was talking about Iron Man's hero design to boys in general - here in US or Korea. Iron Man suit is bad ass. Mecha genre is just one of the many things kids like. The original Dragon ball HUGE In 80s/90s in East Asia.

US likes the same Power Rangers, Voltron, Thundercats, etc that swept the country in similar times.

I must say, I'm surprised Iron Man was ranked that low when the movie was announced. Since I'm a filthy casual, I didn't even think to run to internet for reaction when Iron Man 1 was announced. All I remember is people were ripping on Robert Downey Jr. understandably (similar to Heath Ledger for Joker).

Thanks for your 'inside comic book' perspective, but in return, you may have lost some perspective of the general audience. It's no brainier Iron Man is attractive as hell as a superhero at a glance than the generic yet-another-chick-in-a-suit-is-she-Supergirl-for-MCU hero?

Speaking of garbage heroes in MCU, I agree- Ant Man? LOL. I remember kids saying even Thor movie was ridiculous since he was a literal god. What about that random ass poor man's Iron Man that I cringe at every time:

You seem pretty passionate about the comic book heroes, thanks for the input. I didn't know Iron Man was laughed at that much when the movie was announced. His design is awesome... he's a literal Inspector Gadget on steroids.

When my wife first mentioned this upcoming film (maybe six months ago or more), I thought of this guy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Marvel_(DC_Comics)

Probably because I had been watching the 'Young Justice' cartoon series.

As for the trailer, MCU movies (maybe just comic book movies in general) are leaving me increasingly underwhelmed, this trailer was no exception, though it was a teaser trailer really which I generally try to avoid because they're a waste of my time.

If DCU makes their own Captain Marvel movie, I'd die laughing.

A couple of years ago DC switched their approach and focus to instead title the character as "Shazam."

The situation is a bit complicated as Captain Marvel (DC) was not originally a DC Comics property. From what I know before DC decided to revive the character (decades ago) Marvel Comics already established copyright for "Captain Marvel" for their own character. So while DC was able to refer to it's character as Captain Marvel it couldn't actually title and of it's properties with it and instead used Shazam.

If DCU makes their own Captain Marvel movie, I'd die laughing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shazam!_(film)

It's also aiming for a much stronger comedy element than the other DC films.

I don't know if you can say he was laughed at but in terms of popularity him and really the Avengers as whole was considerably lower especially on a mainstream level. Marvel's most popular characters by far were Spiderman, Wolverine and the X-Men.
