I'm looking for some speakers to go in my 1989 Ford Probe (babes love the Probe
) but have no idea where to begin. My friend put in a Pioneer DEH-P2000 about 3 years ago. It really improved the sound of the factory speakers but I planned to upgrade them in the near future. Well, that was 3 years ago and now I'm finally getting around to upgrading

According to Crutchfield, I can fit 6 1/2's up front in the doors and 4x6's in the rear seat/side panel. A 6 1/2 will work but it requires some modifications.

So, here's my questions:
- Which speakers should I get? I'm not looking to get a sub, I don't want to spend more than $200...preferably less than $150. I do want some bass from the speakers but I don't like/want/think I can afford a sub right now.
- How the heck do I install speakers? People say it's easy but I've never done it before. Any manuals out there on how to get the back speakers in? I've looked around in the car but can't find any easy way to do it.
- How hard would the modifications be to get 6 1/2 speakers in the back? Would it be worth it?

TIA

Is your budget <$150 for all 4 speakers? If you want something half decent, Infinity's Reference series is really good for the price. They sound really nice on any HU unamped. (If you plan to amp later on don't get References) Their 652i's run on avg. $45 a pair on eBay. Regarding fitting 6.5's into a 4x6 spot - I've never fit 6.5's into a 4x6 (only a 6x9) - I honestly don't know if you can even stick 6.5's in that spot, but if so, you'd need a conversion plate. (You'll need to custom make one yourself or stop by any car stereo shop - CarToys will charge $35 for parts and labor for a pair of conversion plates)

rage is right, infinities are fawking godly for car audio. As for sticking below 150-200, I ask you - do you know any best buy or circuit city employees? They get insane discounts (sometimes over 50%) off the displayed price. From BB I would pick up cerwin vegas. They are fawkin good too.

Alright, so getting a 6.5 in my rear is impossible for a n00b (edit: umm, that sounds bad). What are some good 4x6 speakers for the back then? I was looking up some reviews but there's not that many 4x6 speakers out there.... Either that or no one buys 4x6 speakers

I am in the same situation. I can fit 6.5 in the front and the back for my Jetta. I work at BB so price isn't a problem but i would like to stay below 300 for a Hu and a 4 speakers(2 pairs).

Considering the fact that i get up to 50% off on speakers and about 33% off on the Head Unit.

So can someone suggest a combo for me that will be plug and play? I am not planning to put in a Amp either.

Thanks

I'm looking on Ebay and seeing the Infinity Reference 652i for about $50-$60 plus shipping....definitely not a bad deal.

Any word on the 4x6 speakers? Should I stick with the Reference series or try something else?

Thanks.

There's 45 minutes left on the auction for the Infinity Reference 652i...any reason I should not buy them?

I'm still looking for some good 4x6 speakers. Cerwin Vega makes some nice looking ones but they're dang expensive

Just get a Honda Civic with a stock radio, and put a Sony Audio sticker on the back window.

That is what they do anyways...

in all honesty, i would leave the rear 4x6's alone. speakers of that size don't produce enough midrange or umph for you to even notice. the highs may sound better, but no one really cares about rear-fill anyway. if you plan on sitting in the backseat alot, then go ahead and get some new ones. otherwise why bother.

for the 6.5's, the infinity reference is an excellent suggestion as long as you don't plan on hooking them up to an external amp. infinity kappas also sound excellent, but are a little more pricey (i think?) if you ever do plan on getting an amp, then you want to stay away from the normal crap speakers you find at bestbuy and circuit city and invest in some decent components with a seperate tweeter (i.e. boston acoustics, mb quartz, dynaudio... )

Polks are good. You can get GXR6's from Crutchfield for about $90 a pair. Sound very good to me. If you buy from them they'll also tell you exactly how to install them. Basically, if you're at all handy you can install them. In most cases you'll just pull off the door panel and swap speakers. In some cases you might need to drill new mounting holes but that's no big deal. If you're lucky you won't need to pull the whole panel but just a grill or something.

Anyone else agree with that idea? The car is small so I can hear the rear speakers from the driver's seat since they are kinda pointed towards the front.

I don't. I'd do what I could to fit in the 6x9's. The bigger woofer will allow bass resonance in the hatchback area.

The 4x6's are currently in the rear side of the car....not really in the hatchback area.
I suppose I could put some 6x9's in hatchback area...but then I'd need an amp and would have to upgrade from Infinity References to Infinity Kappas or something else. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I actually meant the 6.5's not 6x9's...

So the speakers are at like the armrest area of the back seat?

Correct. I could go take some quick pics if that'd help.

Both Crutchfield and SoundDomain have said the 6.5s will fit in the rear side where I currently have 4x6 speakers. It will take a little work but it should fit.

I also have no idea how to get at the speakers. I tried to take the grills or whatever is currently covering the speakers off but I couldn't.

I'm going to take some pictures. BRB

any 4x6 will be better than what you have. It all depends on how much you want to spend. I currently am running the Mb Quarts in the rear doors of my Silverado. They are awesome, and I highly recommend them., but they are pricy.
