Why? You don't owe Alpine or any other company anything. When I'm looking for a head unit, I'm going to get the best one for my money. Brand Loyalty is for losers and it doesn't mean a thing.

Here's my response to this statement:

I have owned probably 5 different head units from Sony, JVC, Kenwood, and Alpine. So I do have some experience with other brands to make a comparison. The other units were good, but IMO not as good as the Alpine I put in my car three years ago. It has never, AND I MEAN NEVER, skipped once, or had a single problem with it. I should mention I bought it used. BTW, somebody else must have liked it also because they tried to break into the car to get it, unsuccessfully.

When I bought my truck in March of this year, I needed a head unit. No, I didn't go straight to the store and grab an Alpine. It took me two weeks before I decided on another Alpine. I gave them all a fair chance. I read the reviews, check at the specs, and the price. I couldn't be happier. Guess what. No skips yet and it plays CDR's with out a hitch, even during off roading and rough roads.

You're right. I don't owe Alpine anything. But they will continue to get my bussiness and I will whole heartily reccommend Alpine to others because of my good experience with them.

I suppose you never go buy the same brand of anything more than once. You're probably afraid that you might get branded as a loser.

I just looked at your nick PowerMac4Ever. You want to tear somebody up for brand loyalty? What a joke.

Right. NightFlyer tries to bash me for supporting American cars and you try to bash me for owning a Mac. What's with YOU guys? I drive a Toyota and I don't use a Mac. You just assumed that I was a Mac user because of my nick. Sorry, no Macs here. Try again though.

Not at all. I'm not bashing you for owning a Mac. And heaven forbid if I assumed you owned a Mac with a nick like that. I'm bashing you for basically calling me a loser (which you assumed). You opened yourself up for a rebuttle when you made a statement as you did in your first reply to this thread, which really had no place in here. In fact these posts concerning about what we are talking about now don't belong in here either so this is my last one on the "bashing" subject.

My problem is that as soon as someone creates a thread about wanting a Head Unit, everyone comes in here and yells "Alpine! Alpine! Alpine!!!!" Did anyone realize that the MP3 unit for Alpine is, what, $340 brand new? None of the Alpine users seam to care that the creator's budget is around $200. They just come in here and post about the greatness of their Alpine unit and how everyone else should by Alpine no matter how much it costs.

Isaiah, I agree with Misle's suggestion on the JVC MP3 unit. JVC seems to have really put out some good units in their MP3 series. The price is right too.

All right, you invoked another response from me.

Isaiah wanted to know what people thought were good units to buy or look at. So according to you, Alpine owners should set on their hands and not recommend one? Hey, I like the Denons also, but way out of his price range.

He also stated that he was undecied about MP3 playback. Yes, I did realize that his budget was under $200 and I stated that most MP3 players (good quality ones) would be over $200. For CD, CDR, and CDRW playback, Alpine make 3 and maybe 4 units that sell brand new for under $200, those are the ones I was refering to.

I didn't see anyone in this thread that recommended an Alpine say "Buy and Alpine or your a loser." Maybe the fact that everybody yells "Alpine, Alpine, Alpine!" should tell you that Alpine must make pretty good units.

Why don't we keep the responses to the subject matter and not for your personal crusade against Alpine and Alpine owners.

My later comments were not directed at you specifically, Dead3ye. You were one that chose to argue against what I said. But, once I responded to what you said, my comments *conveniently* don't apply to you personally. Very nice. Nonetheless, I stand by everything I said here. Next time I'll be more specific up front though.

I think the JVCs offer the best bang for the buck as far as MP3 playback goes. But I'm no expert.

Edit Fixed up my bad grammar.

Oh, and it was BLATANTLY obvious that you trying to bash me for owning a Mac. Then you tried to cover it up real smooth when you found that I don't use Macs. Want to know what computer I have? Ask me. I am not responsible for your assumptions.

It usually sells for $230. I got it from Circuit City during a special offer for $199.

another nod for the JVC SX980. I just got it this week and amvery impressed. I got it for 180 shpiped from sounddomain.com - they pricematch competitors 105%, and I got the wire harness and install kit too. It was a do-it-yourself job, and after a trip to walmart to get a WORKING install kit that fit my car better than the one that was supposedly made for my car, all things went well. For ~200, from what I could tell the JVC was the best thing out there. Agreed, alpines, at least for the fancy mp3 playback and all the cool stuff, seem way overpriced. And the others, jensens, aiwas, even some of the sonys seemed to have their own specific quirks and/or problems too. i'd say go with the JVC!

I have a question when you guys talk about car CD players

When you mention that a particular car CD player can play mp3's do you mean that it can play CD-R+ CD-RW's with mp3's on them, or that through something like a portable mp3 player you could listen to mp3's through your car CD player?

That JVC KD-SX980 is looking better and better. Pricematching to SoundDomain is an excellent idea. It looks like Etronics has the lowest price. So, you can probably get it for ~$163 + shipping through Sound Domain if you're willing to do a little work. Here's a big picture of it from Crutchfield.

What I like:
Nicely laid out controls. Buttons look nice and easy to read.
Auxiliary Input right on the face.
Nice display

What I don't like:
No rotary volume knob. Just up and down buttons for volume. This doesn't matter to some people, but I prefer rotary.
The remote is pretty fugly.

Edit Fixed link. Also, auxiliary input is the sound port that allows you to plug an external MP3 or MiniDisc player to the head unit and it play through that. This JVC has built-in MP3 CD-RW support as well as auxiliary input. Very cool feature.

All the units or just the low end. I know that Alpine has a low end unit now for cheaper. But I thought the high end stuff was still good. Same thing with Orion. They make the best amps and woofers, but you have to buy the high end line. If you buy the Cobalt series you should just go to radio shack and buy factory replacments.

They are making a lot more low end stuff now but now they are trying to market to regular consumers, not mainly just audiophiles. Their product is still good, just worsening year by year
