Ok you internet geniuses, i have something im looking for. A few years back, a car company, i think a sports car, came out with a commercial that featured their car drving on an empty LA freeway at like 8 in the morning. It was amazing seeing it, knowing how busy the LA streets are. I remember reading an article about how they did it, and if you can help me look, i would really apprieciate it. I still however, cannot find the commercial.

aight thanks, does anyone have to info on the way they filmed it, it has to do with them taking a camera and putting it somewhere for a few days so it can get small smaples of the road with no cars, they they like composite it all together and put in the car

hehe...

My guess is that they filmed the highway from a set angle, then created some sort of difference map of all the frames. Basically, they superimposed the 1000s of frames over each other, and were able to digitally remove the cars from the highway and create a completely blank matte plate of the highway.

Over the course of a few days, I'm sure they had enough film stock to catch each area of the road empty at least once, and with proper lighting conditions.

thats exactly it, but i know there is a site somewhere that explains it more in depth, and i am researching this and wondered if someone knew what that type of filming was called, or whaere i could find this site.

It wasn't a damn Solara guys - it was a 4 door Camry. To mix Camry + "sportiness" is a joke. They had him do a 180 from reverse into drive, jump a massive hill, do donuts (I think). The only real Solara commercial (at least for the 04 model) I've seen was in the Universal Studios commercial where a mummy is hauling ass trying to get to work.

I don't know of the specific site you are asking about, but if you have the Forrest Gump DVD, you can find a good example of the process.

Check out the special features disc, and there is a section about cut scenes and visual effects where they discuss a scene in which Forrest is playing ping pong with one of the presidents (perhaps Nixon).

It involved a lot of roto work, along with excellent matte painting skills. Some of the process can be automated, but the majority of the work has to be done by hand, frame by frame.

Same with the scense in which Gary Sinise's legs had to be digitally removed.
