Had a car broken into outside a movie theater at night in a nice upper middle class suburb in NJ. Smashed front window and only thing missing was a North Face fleece I had left in the car. Parking spot next to me had broken glass on it as well, but no car was there. Well those owners arrived shortly after we had reached my car. Their car was goners. Also a Honda Accord, just newer. Thanks Jeebus?

Parked in the West Village, NYC, during the daytime sometime in the late 90's. I had taken my cash and bank card with me and a friend to run into a shop a couple blocks away. Only thing left in the wallet was a pill of ecstasy. Got back to the car, no broken glass this time, but the pill was gone. Someone broke in and took a random pill. I was gone from the car for no longer than 20 minutes.

Both of these were 20 or near 20 years ago. No problems since.

The most valuable thing I will leave in my car backseat is a camera tripod in a case. You can't tell it's a tripod so you assume there is a camera in there as well.

Anything else comes in with me - whether I'm running into the store for 10 minutes or heading in somewhere for an hour appointment.

As long as it's the thief, I'm okay with them being shot. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes...

I really wish they would legalize killing thieves. I'm not even asking for them to legalize guns, I'll come up with a creative way to take care of them without guns.

Heck the ways I have in mind would be fairly easy to make look like an accident.

That's dumb as shit. I knew a couple high school kids that did some hijinks robbing stuff. Non-violently in every sense of the word. They did not deserve to die. That's fucking asinine. You should move to Somalia.

Living in Los Angeles taught me to never leave anything visible inside your car. Thieves will break a window to take a jacket. I try to never leave anything lying around in my car and haven't had a single break in living in the area we're in now and we've lived here for almost 20 years now.

Knock wood...

Because yelling at them "Hey you little punks!" is really going to make them think about what they have done, huh?

Sorry, but when it comes to things like this in life you're simply not worth the life you have. Better to put those genetics to rest before they are passed on any further.

No, but jail might. I agree with PixelSquish. Nobody deserves to die for petty theft.

I'm not a fan of vigilante justice for crimes like this.

Yes, but if you can't shoot them, then what initiative do they have to stay there while the cops come in 20 minutes? Yeah sure, if you are able to point at them and hold them still for 20 minutes while the cops come - sure, throw them in jail. I don't have a problem with that. But find me a thief that is going to stay still after you catch him.

If they want to take off after doing all kinds of damage to your property and trying to steal your property, blow their brains out on the side of the curb. Otherwise you're doing a disservice to everyone.

Not to blame the victim here, but why are you leaving your gun in your car anyways? It is not secure as it would be in your home in a safe or on your person. You'd feel pretty bad if that gun was then used to rob your house or you as you left for work the next morning.

From personal experience though, I've never had my car broken into for some reason... I can think of a few reasons why:

I never drive an overall expensive car. Currently driving an '08 Acura.
I never leave shit in plain sight, ever. I think the most valuable thing I have is a semi decent pair of Oakleys, but I always put it in the sunglass glove box.
If I have to keep something valuable, such as my work laptop for an after-work event I always make sure to put it in the trunk.

I used to work with a guy who said that he lived in a not so good part of New York. You did not have a radio in your car and you opened up the glove compartment so that the turds would see that you did not have a radio in your car so they would bot break your window.

They non-violently were robbing people? Robbery itself implies that they threatened harm / use of force / etc... Based on the rest of your statement I assume you mean that they stole stuff from cars (not robbery).

You know how to 100% protect yourself from not getting killed by a property owner protecting their property? Don't fucking break into it and try to take shit. Take some personal responsibility over your actions.

I'm not saying we should all become vigilantes and go hunting. But I certainly don't give a shit when a thief is beaten, injured, killed, etc... because he was trying to enrich himself off of the backs of others. Like I said, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

robbing, theft, I interchanged the words. Although I did see a definition for robbery that stated: "the action of robbing a person or place."

They started by stealing bubblegum and candy from grocery stores and then sold them at school. The did eventually graduate to burglarizing a few homes when making sure nobody was home. This was as teenagers. They had no weapons. And look if they went to burglarize a home and a homeowner was there and the owner shot them, that is what it is. I am just saying it's a bit too cavalier to say it's fine if all thieves are shot. Sometimes you should just wish a non-violent resolution of the matter and hoping the criminals get their act together. Sometimes they are just stupid kids who have no inclination towards violence in the slightest. They were two white kids in a white upper middle class town so justice was lenient on them. They committed no crimes after that which I know of except ingesting some drugs without getting caught, and once getting caught for smoking weed. Conditional discharge.

One became a teacher, the other guy ended up in something to do with construction, and then eventually solar energy work. I can vouch for the teacher guy, he turned into a really good dude, was never involved in any violent acts ever. The construction guy I have no idea, I just see him pop up on Facebook here and there so have no idea how he ran his life since besides seeing him work his way through construction jobs.

I had a friend who used to steal from me when I was a kid, like small stuff, lego parts, k'nex parts, I was a lot into electrical stuff as a kid, and as a kid that stuff was hard to come by, like sockets, wiring etc so he'd steal stuff like that too. He was really bold about it too, as I'd eventually find the same stuff he stole when I went to his house and be like "hey that's mine!" he'd just shrug it off and let me have it back.

Lost contact with him at some point as we kind of went our separate ways. Later on when I'm in college he calls me up and we hang out again, and I ordered parts to help him build a computer, that he was going to buy off me. He ended up breaking into my parents' house to steal some of the parts. Really that guy was a huge snake, we had lot of fun times together as kids and teenagers, but then he'd back stab me or anyone else any moment he could. For some reason I'd always give him benefit of doubt thinking "he changed". He didn't. Those people don't change.

Petty theft only turns into bigger theft and crime. I'm all for nipping it in the bud.

so you left a surface in the car, overnight?

And how did they get into the car without breaking a glass?

I guess pawning off electronics is easier than guns anyway, so that could be why they didn't steal the gun.

Here only asylum seekers looking for beer money break into cars. One broke 40 windows in one outing just to take the shopping cart coins.
I've never heard of other car break ins. This is why many houses don't have gates/doors in front of their parking areas, there's not a need.

I left my work backpack in the car that had my surface in it. I'm not too worried about it, I was going to sell it anyway. Never had an issue with it before, I just moved to a supposedly safer area of town. It definitely had the druggie sweat smell in it the next morning, hard to explain but its a very distinct smell.

They punched the lock out on the passenger side with a screw driver? Maybe, the lock cylinder was gone. I just used the remote to unlock it in the morning. It's a Hyunda Elantra btw

Locked or not, who da fuq leaves a weapon in their car overnight? That's plain stupid and irresponsible.

Lots of people do, they make gun holsters for seats and mini safes that mount to the bottom of seats even. Especially if you don't want to be seen holstering it every time you get out of the car.

Oh sucks no local recording?

No, the system I bought is shit. The camera is wireless and goes camera -> router -> dvr. Instead of camera -> dvr.

I actually did get a hit on where the surface was. It showed up on that find my devices tab very briefly but someone must have formatted it =\ Oh well, it's going on the insurance claim since I need to get new locks which are apparently super expensive.
