I need to get brighter headlights for my car (the current ones suck), so the
question is, what kind should I get, how to install them, and are there any
issues I need to know about?

thanks in advance.

you can install some fog lights. piaa fogs are nice, but mucho dinero. my second choice would be pilot fog lights. you will have to drill holes into the bumper.

or replace your stock bulbs, but don't get higher wattage ones. they'll melt your sockets and wire harness. i recommend sylvania silverstar bulbs. very white and bright, and it only uses 60/70W.

also, check out www.tauruscarclub.com

Millions and millions of people have no problem at all with OEM lights. Why do you?

Go to your local Napa and pick up some "high output" halogens. They're normal wattage, and clear (so they're definitely legal, and normal people won't laugh at you), but they're made better, with a better halogen gas formulation, and they do make a difference. They're also quite inexpensive, so try them.

I looked at some sylvania bulbs. Aside from the silverstar ones, they are recommending the xenarc
ones which are supposedly brighter, last longer, and use less power. Are there downsides to this,
like, they are not legal or can only be installed on certain types of cars?

Also should I try to install them myself (I have as little knowlege about this as is humanly possible) or have
it done at some garage?

And the joy of the ever increasing population of SUV's with their higher-than-car-level headlights...argg

the xenarc series are HID replacements. they are illegal because, when installed, the beam pattern will be different and blind on-coming traffic. besides, i hear they're a PITA to wire up. if you're not the least bit car or electrical gifted, you're gonna have problems. easiest thing is to replace the bulbs. the instructions are in your owner's manual.

"I'm just dying to hear why these lights don't cut it? "

Over time the output of bulbs will decrease. Also the lens and even inside the housing can build up a film or just become dirty reducing the light output.

Check the links I posted for more information.

It's a legitmate question.

I had a Ford Thunderbird (very similar car) and the headlights were really not bright enough. I know where this guy is coming from.

Holy crap! LOOK AT THESE PRICES! Jeebus! :Q

Hell, my headlight replacements are about $5.00 each for my car and a few bucks more for the van. I'm old and can still see just fine with them... and I never even use my brights!
