This also would be terribly inaccurate, I had to go to the extent of going to the County Sherriff's Office to get paperwork proving that the speed limit was 55 on the Rural county road I have to drive 7 miles down to get to my home. For work.
This was DirectTV when they first installed GPS tracking on the company vehicles, I kept getting flagged for speeding 55 in a 35 by their system. It's 55 unless otherwise posted for our county roads. They were trying to write me up for it.

I get emails from Google telling me my monthly driving stuff, how many miles and highlights of my "trip" to so and so place. Get one for the end of the year too. I had one year where it said I put down enough miles to circle the earth one year.

I still have a job driving a company vehicle insured by the company, but I am sure they are using this data to inflate my rates. We have 1 car insured, for 2 drivers, I am not primary driver. I have had Progressive but it has went up 100 a month over 1 year period. would be 3rd renewal.

Gross. Old dumb cars for life.
My connected car has reverted to a dumb car, sadly. All the U.S. wireless carriers have shut off their 3G networks, so this affected a bunch of vehicles prior to about MY2017ish or so. Because U.S. automakers weren't forward looking and were still deploying 3G long after LTE was mainstream. The only thing I miss is remote ventilation during the hot summer months. šŸ˜°

I haven't checked my renewal yet, but I'm 99% prepared for Mercury Insurance to piss me off again. They've been spiking premiums for several years, so no reason to stop now. Unfortunately they were still price competitive, so I haven't jumped ship... yet.

Average new car price is $48K so you can bet ins cost will keep going up.

The boy is under 25, his is $1K/yr but it's bundled with the bosses car and the house. Auto Owners. $500K liability might be enough if something major happens...

I remember when I was under 25 my insurance cost more per year than what I paid for the car, it was brutal. Had to go under my dad's insurance. And yeah this is only going to get worse as cars get more and more expensive, and if they really do end up pushing EVs more that will jack up the prices even more. Most EV accidents are a total loss, as nobody wants to work on them, not even body shops. They are also not really designed with repairability in mind so even a fender bender can end up requiring to rebuild the whole car due to lot of panels being a large single piece.

What I want to know is what is the median new car price. Averages are pulled up when there is a lower bound but no upper bound.

Consumers also don't have to buy a new vehicle at or near the average new price. They just get suckered into it because advertising works.

That average seems about right, look at any dealership site and it seems most cars start at like 30-40k. Then the trucks are pushing 80k and then they'll have a few sports cars that are over 100k. That average figure is probably also without tax/fees. You usually end up paying around 20% more than the advertised price. 13% tax, then all the add ons that are kinda needed like a block heater, spare tire etc And dealership markup.

It's about 15% less than the average:

Although I don't disagree that consumers are sheeple, I'd also contend automakers are building what they can sell profitably. If people stopped getting suckered, we'd have a lot fewer land barges being produced and sold.

Automakers are definitely steering people to higher profit margin vehicles, hence the "choice" of crossovers and SUVs and the relative disappearance of sedans and entry level vehicles and trims. There is also a role that CAFE standards play, in that "light trucks" have looser standards. But that's also why manufacturers advertise that stuff. It's kind of all a cycle that automakers can take advantage of. Turns out, decades of advertising works.

Of course, that's just "good business" when the regulatory environment isn't done right. I think we actually agree here; I'm just emphasizing that gullible consumers are very much to blame as well.

I have two mid-late 90s vehicles, so no normal tracking. I added a gizmo from my insurance company that does limited details and gets me a significant discount. I'm at the halfway point of this policy term, so there shouldn't be a rate change until the end of this year.

Believe me when I say all your devices are measuring and tracking your surprise history.

My surprise history? Good surprises or bad surprises?

Anyways, I am using Duck Duck Go more than Google now and have found Protonmail a good backup email alternative to the spies at gmail.

Speaking of spying.....

I still use Google Street View and was looking at a nearby museum. I took a video of it back in 2012 and was comparing how it and the nearby surroundings have changed.

The VERY NEXT DAY I get an email invitation from that same museum to come and visit, offering discount tickets in my Gmail account. I have not been there in 12 years, they NEVER had my email account and now suddenly they are spamming me after looking at a street view of them 24 hours earlier?!

Privacy is an illusion.

Ah LexisNexis and Westlaw. Those two forms the foundation of legal education and research. Or in other words, they make money from people doing bad things that require court.

that's pretty good, mine's almost that much and it's just me and 1 vehicle
They make up for it by requiring minimum coverages on the house/2 cars, hence the $500K. $3600/year if I pay it in full. And we're in calm nowhere so no floods/earthquakes/ tsunamis.

Got tired of the state farm fuckage and went to an independent with multiple lines. Price goes up, tell my agent to shop it. The company truck is $900/yr through progressive. Win.

Americans bought into the bigger is better to a point that is just ridiculous. Trucks are an extension of some men's testicles and wee-wee's. More room more truck more higher more this! Its' hard for people to resist the power of billions of dollars in marketing that push these things, and it's also tidily wrapped up in the flag of patriotism - this 'Murica, everything's bigger! Bigger is better! Bacon makes everything better! Check out our new monster truck Hummer now with coal rolling and comes with a steering wheel made of bacon! Bacon wrapped steering wheel filled with Viagra! Makes your pee-pee huge!

ah yeah good old state farm! they unexpectedly doubled my auto policy premium on an old crappy civic to like 350$ a half in 2009, with no accidents or claims that would warrant it. so i jumped to geico, then later to progressive. it's been 15 years since then (getting a brand new car in that time and increasing my limits) and i've still not had a premium exceed what state farm was trying to charge haha

When I ran stock Android I used to get something similar. I would get home from say, McDonald's, or Tim Horton's and just get a random popup "how was your visit at Tim Horton's?". My location is always turned off. yeah, software switches do jack shit. They still track you.

The most freaky one though is when I casually mentioned it would be fun to climb a cell tower. 15 minutes later I get an ad for the company we contract out to climb our towers, they had a job opening. Can't call that a coincidence when it's that specific.

I really wish we had better ways to protect ourselves from this spying. It seems there's only so much we can do but it's never enough. Our own tech is basically being used against us and there's no viable alternatives to any of it. As far as phones go, custom roms help, but we still get spied via browser too on our PC so can't get away from this stuff 100%.

Demand EU like consumer protections in the US.

But you'd be labeled a communist by the Republicans at the least.
