Americans bought into the bigger is better to a point that is just ridiculous. Trucks are an extension of some men's testicles and wee-wee's. More room more truck more higher more this! Its' hard for people to resist the power of billions of dollars in marketing that push these things, and it's also tidily wrapped up in the flag of patriotism - this 'Murica, everything's bigger! Bigger is better! Bacon makes everything better! Check out our new monster truck Hummer now with coal rolling and comes with a steering wheel made of bacon! Bacon wrapped steering wheel filled with Viagra! Makes your pee-pee huge!
Yeah, but how am I going to move my refrigerator around every other day without my truck? I don't need to do that, but what if I did? Checkmate liberals.

There are people who need a truck and people who think they need one. I don't have any issues with people who truly need one. However, my gut leads me to believe many fall in the latter category. There are also some that might "need" one once or twice a year that don't know how to run budgets and realize it would be way cheaper to rent or pay for delivery for those handful of times.

True. Me, right now, the hoa borked sign is in the bed. Every few weeks, I haul gas yard equipment (@lxskllr ) to the rental to clean up. Not recently but in the past, my wife was a yard sale diver for things to resell. 1 effing trip to Penn St hauling furniture. And I drive 1.3 miles to the office. 2010 Tacoma, 123K miles. It should be the last vehicle I buy for myself.

Did I mention fuck driving to Penn St?

Full sized pick ups are no longer full sized. You used to be able to lay an 8' sheet of plywood flat in a pick up truck bed with the tailgate up and latched. Now half of what used to be the bed is passenger seating (or stereo component housing) and you can't hardly lay a 4 x 4 sheet flat.

8' box should be standard, or at least make it an option. It's not even an option anymore unless you go super duty. The beds are comically small now. What are you going to carry in that, 2 garbage cans?

Average new car price is $48K so you can bet ins cost will keep going up.

The boy is under 25, his is $1K/yr but it's bundled with the bosses car and the house. Auto Owners. $500K liability might be enough if something major happens...
An umbrella liability policy on top of auto/home is not terribly expensive and is looking more and more necessary as prices on cars go up.

Edit: I guess I should read the rest of the thread before replying.

>> The only thing I miss is remote ventilation during the hot summer months.

You can always get one of those auto ventshade type things made of polycarbonate, then roll down your window a little bit on the days that are going to get hot. I've done that on 2 of my vehicles, but can't find one for my 2 door Metro hatchback.

Yep, sunshade on the windshield and cracking the windows keeps the interior temperature = outside temperature in the Arizona summer.

Welp, that's it, time to have a shack delivered to some railroad adjacent land, move in, start writing my manifesto and mailing suspicious packages. Ciao!

Just reviewed the auto policy renewal for my mom's 2004 Acura TSX. It's up 17.6% YoY, but that's WITH some Covid-19 credit applied.*
If you remove this one-off adjustment, it's up 22% YoY. Now I get that everyone's insurance premiums have been rising briskly, but this is a 20 year old car. The premium has nearly doubled in 7 years as the card gets older and declines in value. In the past, they were still cheaper than GEICO and Progressive but I think I need to do some rate shopping again.

I don't want to switch to per-mile (tracked by GPS) or cut-rate insurance.

For my car, Progressive hadn't raised the premium in about 3 years but they finally increased it about 10% YoY.

* Insurers had returned some money to ratepayers during Covid because everyone was driving much less. IIRC the state insurance commissioner found out not all refunds had been paid TO DATE, so I suspect Mercury is just doing that.

Cant wait to get my suspicious 📦.

Can you include a glossy tri-fold brochure on how to save 15% on car insurance?

What about just dropping collision coverage on the vehicle? It's 20 years old.

My '95:

Comprehensive Actual Cash Value $500 26
Collision Actual Cash Value $500 11

My '98

Comprehensive Actual Cash Value $500 36
Collision Actual Cash Value $500 18

$500 is the deductible, 26, 11, 36 and 18 are the premiums. Not sure why Comp is twice Collision, but dropping Collision won't make much difference.

Given their ages, actual cash value won't get me much for a total loss.
