Well upon further review of these posts I have concluded that this is "messed up". I'll let you know what the dealer says when I call him

I have had to dive back into my car a couple a times put it in park so it doesnt roll and hit another vehicle

It is not normal. For safety, ignitions require you to be in park to remove the key for the reason that a car left in gear will roll away. AFAIK diesel vehicles will allow you to remove the key.ey can heat up.

I had this issue with an old 87 Chevy S10 pickup. I could take the key out while the engine was running, because the keylock/steering lock was wore out.

Hilarity ensude one day when driving with some of my friends...
I took the key out, and then the steering column locked while I was driving...
and I couldn't get the key back in...
and the road bent to the left...
and my friends had to help push it out of the ditch...

It just occurred to me, this is probably a vehicle with a console. Where is the ignition switch on a car with a console? Also, why would anybody put there car in anything but park when leaving it? What about the parking brake? I thought I was the only one who didn't bother with it!

1. Yes it is in the console

2. I have never had a car with this "problem" so I tend to forget about it. I have an xm receiver near gear shifter and its easier to remove the receiver when the car is not in park so sometimes it slips my mind

That is pretty messed up.

Why, what's the difference?
the car is not working as it should. i know you're stuck in the mid 20th century, i'm sorry.
Oh please.

On a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being a safety hazard, where would this "messed up" issue rank?

It's simple, really.

The key isn't supposed to come out until the vehicle is turned off and the transmission is in Park. If the key is removed with the transmission in Neutral, the vehicle can roll away, hence it is a danger.

The key isn't falling out. He's turning the key off while in drive and in neutral which is normal. There are situations where you would need to turn the engine off immediatly while in drive. One example might be when your throttle gets stuck wide open. You'll lose power stearing, but at least you saved yourself and the car.
that's called "put it in neutral"

*bangs head on wall*

LOL. Problem between steering wheel and seat. Try reinstalling the driver.
