I heard that it is every 3000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first... , is that an industry standard ?

Tire air pressure should ONLY be based on YOUR tires and YOUR car, not some abstract numbers presented to you.

tire pressure depends on quite a few factors; weight carried, size of tired blah blah etc etc

u can read the recommended it on (usuallY) the driver's side door sill

i get my oil changed every 3000 miles with dino oil (not synthetic) most people would agree every 3000 miles boarders on overkill for modern engines...

some synthtetics can be driven for 10k miles before changing.

Tire pressure are based on vehicle weight, type/size of tire etc. It has been my experience that the reccomended pressures on door jams are lower than I like. The manufacturers do this to improve the ride of the vehicle. This was part of the problem with the Firestone/Explorer fiasco. The tires were underinflated. Most of the time I put a few more pounds in them (never exceed the max that's on the tire) than whats reccomended. It makes the ride a little rougher but it seems to improve the handling and the mileage.

As far as oil goes, use the owners manual recomendations. Changing it more often can't hurt it but it might be overkill.

That 3000 mile stuff is an age old debate. In Europe it is standard practice to follow the manufacturer's recommendation unless you're really stressing the motor. I tend to go between 4-6 thousand between. Time is never an issue since I drive about 2000 miles a month. Honda recommends that I change mine every 7500; I forgot what the timeframe was.

hey NB.

My accord I got it done every 3K and it ran fine until I wrecked it. Wrecked it around 150K miles and the powertrain was still strong.

That's pretty good considering I drove around WOT all day in that car.

I use exclusively mobil 1 oil + cheap fram filter... ...every 3000 miles. Always do own oil changes, mechanics don't know what to do with horizontal opposed engines anyways. They end up emptying my tranny....

Inflate your tires to manufacturer specs and adjust according to your ride/handling preference. Don't go over the max specified on the sidewall. You'll notice the mini spares have inflation rates as high as 60+ psi....simply to be able to support the cars weight given its limited air capacity.

I change my oil every 5/6 thousand miles. Go by your car owners manual reccomendations and not the Jiffy/Speedy/Quick lube marketing departments.

If you want some good oil go with Royal Purple. I have seen test done where they changed the motor oil, trans oil and rear gear lube with Royal Purple products and gained over 10 horse power at the wheels. With nothing but an oil change. Granted it is spendy stuff but still.

Until the tires overheat from the increased friction and explode causing loss of control, usually at highway speeds. Wasnt the Explorer/Firestone fiasco already mentioned in this thread?

"go" for an oil change? i don't understand. i use these things called "jackstands" and a "jack" and also a "pan" but i never have to "go" anywhere to do it but my own driveway.

also disregard anyone who's telling you to look at the sidewall for the correct pressure, that's the max pressure...check on the driver's door jamb.

If your car is under warranty, then you have to "go" and get your oil changed because changing the oil yourself will void the warranty.

Do NOT change the oil every 3,000 miles like Jiffy Lube, etc. suggest. That is pure marketing hype. DO follow the instructions in your owner's manual, which will usually advise changing the oil from every 5,000 (typical) to 10,000 (some newer cars) miles. DO check your oil level every 1,000 miles and top off as necessary. Never let your oil get more than a quart under and never allow it to be more than 1/4 quart over.

I don't think that is true. No where in any warranty book of any vehicle I have owned has it said that by changing my own oil I have voided the warranty. I always save my receipts and fill out the maintenance log but I know of no requirement to "go" anywhere.
