Car rental

Hello,

we were going to Canada with family and some friends and basically we were going to rent 3 cars. One car is going to be driven mostly by me (22 years old), however, since all these rental car places have weird policies about 25 years old or more , my parents are going to rent it.

Will there be any problem with me driving it in Canada and in America ?

Technically, yes.

It is illegal for anyone under 25 to drive a rental car.

Alamo has a minimum age of 21 and Dollar Rent A Car also allows those under 25 to rent in many locations.

If you are not listed on the rental agreement, then you cannot..legally.. drive the car.

Right. The reason for this is insurance rates drop when you hit 25. The car rental companies don't want to pay out the arse for the rates of those individuals under 25. If you get pulled over or in an anccident for whatever reason you'd be in a world of hurt.

I'm 21 and I recently rented a car, legally. They just charge you through the nose, and not all rental places will rent to you if you're under 25.

of course not, if you have your parents rent the car and put you as an additional driver.

if you crashed your car and the insurance provides you with a rental, you can get one even if you're under 25.

Well, the final point, it seems like its easier and cheaper just to drive up there myself Only 2000 miles, that's nothing

Budget, Dollar, Enterprise and Thrifty rent to drivers over 21, but penalize underage drivers with a daily surcharge. Some even restrict the type of vehicle, making a luxury model or sport utility vehicle off-limits.

When I was between 21-25 I rented from Enterprise several times. The "surcharge" back then was a whopping $10/day which I was gladly willing to pay.

Others have clarified the rental car/age part - you need to call the various agencies and see what their policies are.

However, your post is a little vague - are you intending to rent the car in the US and also drive it in canada? (or vice-versa?) I don't know about US/Canada but I know it's a total disaster to try to rent a car in the US and drive to mexico.

(yes, I realize there's a pretty big difference, but yes, they are both "other countries")

It's gone up a lot since then. I rented two weeks ago and what was supposed to be a $12/day deal turned into almost $40/day. :|

I paid $20 a day extra surcharge when I was 21 and rented a car while in Maui, HI. Most places will let under 25 year old rent but surcharge will apply.
