car repair question

Hi,

I have a 2000 toyota corrolla which has a hard stop... i think the brakes are bad. I went to the pep boys shop, and they told me that my front pads, rotors, and calipers needed to be changed, and are charging me $450 to do it. Is this a reasonable price for such work? Also, is it usual for a 2000 corrolla to need such expensive repairs so early in its life? Just want some basic input, since I know nothing about car repair.

Pads... quite possibly... rotors and calipers... I doubt it. Rotors do wear, but I'm not too sure they would need to be replaced unless your brake pads were so bad they were digging into the rotors.

DON'T go to a national chain. Find a good independent auto tech.

Also I doubt you need calipers. Go to advance and buy a set of wearever sgold/silver pads and a set of rotors and have them installed. Probable doable for half of what pepboys quoted you.

Sounds odd that you would have to replace pads, rotors, and calipers all in one shot.

I don't trust it and would get a second opinion elsewhere. Could something as simple as air in the brake lines.

I just replaced the rotors on my 98 Cavalier a couple months ago. They were in pretty bad shape. You could tell they were bad though, because when you would go to slow down from interstate speeds the car would shimmy, and at lower speeds you could feel the car jerking (not exactly the word I'm looking for, but I can't think of a better one).

Edit: I can't imagine the calipers needing to be replaced. Sounds like BS to me.

ill swap all 4 brakes and pads for 200$. your calipers are fine

Your calipers are probably fine. I have never seen a caliper fail.

Take your car to a smaller garage and have them replace the pads and Maybe the rotors.

Pads are $15-25 a Pair, and rotors are $40-70 a Pair, Calipers are quite a bit more.
