leave it in your heated garage protected by titanium-tooth guard dogs? I hope this is for a Bugatti.

I think you should spend less time being paranoid and more time enjoying whatever steel horse you love so much.

Safest thing is to buy a Toyota Corolla. It's so lame that people don't even want to steal it. They don't even want to break into it to use it as a toilet or to sleep in it.

Let's see... Car stolen, insurance covers it.

Stupid addons, car stolen, insurance covers it.

What exactly have you gained by spending this money?

Insurance doesn't pay for the big bag of cocaine you had in the trunk when the car was stolen.
"oh, the thieves must have stolen it so they could use it for drug smuggling!!!" :sneaky:

I think my car also has a $1000 deductible, so that would be a loss as well. I also have some rocks in the trunk. Big rocks are surprisingly hard to find.

The Corolla is actually one of the most frequently stolen cars. It regularly makes the annual top-10 stolen car list.

That was true in the past. Cheap cars were cheaply made so they tend to be very easy to steal and drive away.

Now that vehicles have computer chips in the keys, the dynamics of car theft have radically changed. You can't break into the car and drive it away. All you can do is tow or push the vehicle away then strip it for parts. That means the most stolen cars today are cars that are worth stripping. Corollas are packed full of junk so there's no reason to steal them.

Anyway, here's a list of the most stolen vehicles.
http://money.cnn.com/2011/08/02/autos/most_stolen_cars/index.htm
1. Cadillac Escalade
2. Chevrolet Silverado
3. Dodge Charger
4. Chevrolet Avalanche
5. Infiniti G37 Coupe
6. GMC Sierra Crew Cab
7. Nissan Maxima
8. Hummer H2
9. GMC Yukon XL 4WD
10. Chevrolet Tahoe

First thing you'll notice is that most of them are GM vehicles. This is because it's easier to steal a GM. The second thing to notice is that these are expensive GM vehicles. The rims and wheels on an escalade are worth money. The engine in a charger is worth money. Everyone on a G37 is worth money.

Here you can watch an interesting video about how these GM vehicles are being stolen. It's a lot easier than you would guess. Smash the window with a rock, get in, pull on the gear shift really hard to force it out of park, then your friend in a truck pushes the vehicle. The steering wheel doesn't lock, so you can steer the thing around corners and around cars if you need to.

So, you think the Corolla magically dropped off to near-zero theft magically in one year? Just because it's off the top-ten list this year doesn't mean it isn't right near the top.

Yes. There's no reason to steal it. The parts are worth nothing, it's a terrible get away car, you can't sleep in it, and it's every bit as hard to steal as a G37. You might as well steal the G37 instead. Corollas made after 2006 never show up on any top 10 most stolen list even though it's one of the best selling cars in the US.

BTW, does anyone have any info on LoJack maintenance? I had the early warning one installed in 2007 and I think two or three times I had false alarms when they called me to ask whether the car was stolen because I didn't have the FOB while driving. Do you need to change the batteries or anything like that on it?

ive considered lojack for my vehicles since my cadillac got stolen. the only reason id want that is to go track down my own vehicle. while that seems like a bad idea, the cops here dont do much for you on stolen vehicles. other than that, i think having insurance and a garage is the most likely option for the less paranoid.

Cheap and effective, pull the fuel injection fuse Who is going to diagnose a starting problem if they are stealing your car?

Ironically it's simple stuff like this that is the most effective. If I ever park my car in Detroit, I'm doing this.

Nobody wants your Corolla, if you ever park in Detroit you should probably leave the windows rolled down, doors unlocked with the keys on the dash, maybe someone would do you the favor of moving out of the way instead of plowing into it when they try to heist the Escalade parallel parked in front of you.

It's ironic you say this. I know several people who intentionally leave their doors unlocked so thieves can steal the radio easier. Why? Because they radio is worth nothing. Fixing the window or replacing the door assembly is super expensive.

Isn't Onstar on all prem model GM cars? Isn't it suppose to PREVENT theft? I dont know much on it but i thought that was the point so the numbers there make it seem like a waste of time and money.

If you have On-Star, you do not need to waste money on LoJack (which the thieves all know about and how to find the unit on the car) .. Also no system is foolproof. I had an 1985 RX-7 with a custom alarm installation (by me) with all parts and keypad hidden. It also included a fuel cutoff through the alarma bcakup alarm battery and I added my own ignition kill, with wiring done such that it looked like it was factory wiring, that you could only operate by a certain set of events, in a specific time. After that it locked it out until you reset the ignition to Off and then On again. End result, it stopped the joy riders who broke in about 7 times. The car was stolen in Manhattan in 2001
Nothing will stop a thief from just taking it with a tow truck or flat bed.
