It's for my 2001 HA... last one died and I need a new one.

Price range unknown. I don't like to waste money, but if you can persuade me it's worth it, then I'm good.

Please share your good/bad experiences!

Also, the best places to get them... BestBuy, Frys, online somewhere... etc.

Seconded. My whole car is outfitted with alpine gear.

Eclipse HUs are really nice also. I'd also recommend those.

alpine or pioneer, if you can find a good deal, pioneer elite

can't go wrong with either brand

depends on what specific models. in general, alpine makes better stuff (although i must admit that they have been slipping the last couple of years). i bought an alpine for my car and a pioneer premier for the wife... just depends on what you need and whats on sale.

What are the advantages of Alpine or Pioneer over something like JVC which is 1\2 the price?

Alpine's UI is not as good as Pioneer. Pioneer has them beat hands down when it comes to that and features. But IMO, Alpine HUs sound better. I have a Pioneer 8600MP, an alpine MRF-545 powering JL XR653 and Diamond Audio D661a speakers, and a Alpine MRV-1005 powering a JL 10w7. I like my setup a lot, but I feel that my gf's car with her stock pioneer speakers, infinity kappa sub + RF amp, and Alpine 9857 HU has better sound quality. My next HU is gonna be this one

I just bought this one DNX7100 to put in my Mazda6. I just added the Kappa 6.1's in front and 2-way kappas in the back. The Kappa 12.1 sub is powered by a MRV-1005 and the main speakers by an alpine MRV-650 amp.
I'm also adding the bluetooth module to the unit. Hopefully it'll sound a lot better than what I had previously.

I bought a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X591.
Installation was pretty straightforward (if you don't order from Crutchfield, still buy the wiring harness, it'll save you loads of time and give you a removable connection, or else you can just splice the wires together).
I don't know how the quality compares to other systems, since the quality is degraded by the sound of an engine running, and tire treads hitting the pavement. It sounds just fine to me though.

It has a USB connection, courtesy of a wire out the back. I use a 2GB flash drive with it. It works just fine. Less than 10 seconds after the car starts, it's gotten acquianted with the flash drive, and starts playing. The joystick thing on the right controls navigation - up/down navigates folders, left/right navigates songs within the folders.

The menus are also quite extensive, allowing for lots of tweaking.

Cons:
- The blue lighting is really damn bright. I toned it down by opening up the faceplate, and covered the plastic diffusers with black permanent marker. I did the same to the surface mount LEDs.
- Hitting up/down to scroll through folders only moves one folder at a time - holding the joystick in those positions will not allow for rapid scrolling, though there might be a menu option for that.

I've not used the radio or CD playing features, just the MP3, and it works fine for that.
The faceplate is removeable, though reattaching it takes a fair amount of light (black plastic fits into black plastic) and careful alignment.
I'm quite satisfied with it - it is flexible in terms of what it can read with the USB connection, so I can feed it plenty of music, and never have to suffer through any god-awful radio commercials.

HU-wise, I'd probably go Pioneer or high-end SONY. Alpines are nice, but fugly. As far as amplifiers go, I'd get some nice solid Rockford or JL amps. I previously had a nice Memphis Belle/Soundstream combo pushing Alpine S's and 2 12" Alpine R's in my Civic.

Too bad it all got stolen. It was the main reason I got rid of my Civic.

After having nice systems in all of my cars, I don't think I will ever get really nice stuff ever again. I kinda like my stock Jetta sound system, but I do miss the days of breaking peoples necks when I passed by.

High end Sony? I'm not sure if you've actually done a comparison between the units. I used to work in car stereos and while they were good, the Pioneers that we had, had a lot better sound than those. And Pioneer is not the best either. Alpine is an awesome brand and they're not fugly at all unless you get memorized by all those flashy organic displays that Pioneer tends to have. I had one of those and they get old quick. Though one day it got stolen out of my car and I ended up buying an Alpine CDA-7995. Man, did that thing rock. It sounded better than the Pioneer with more prominent hard hitting bass and sound clarity.

Pioneer has actually come a long way since Alpine...

JVC stuff is good.

Personally what it will come down to is features and power/outputs.

I have a Kenwood KDC-X990, I could have probably gone with the 890 and saved a few bucks. I liked my old kenwood much better (an 859 which hid it's faceplate automatically).

www.sounddomain.com's forums are excellent to knock around head unit / system ideas.

After putting my hands on several models I'm now leaning towards the Alpine CDA-9881, 3, or 5... depending on what price I can get.

Everyone I talk to seems to really like them. My only problem is that they don't have any EQ settings, atleast that I can find. The only audio controls are balance, fade, bass, and treble.

Alpine's are fucking hot. Get a pioneer if you want your HU to look TOO FAST TOO FURIOUS.

Acole1, I'm not sure about your specific unit, but my Alpine HU has preset EQ settings as well as user created ones. Although I admit, the units are not as uh friendly as they used to be...

but that's besides the point, HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS NOT SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT TIME CORRECTION!? That's the 1 critical feature that swayed me over the pioneer. After using TC for...7 years now, there's no way I could ever go back.

I have an older version of this

http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-e...uct.php?model=CDA-9887

Which actually looks like this, at a quarter of the cost

http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-e...uct.php?model=DVA-9965

to be fair, my 3 yr old pioneer unit has time correction also. But I rarely use it because i feel it affects sound quality. Sounds kinda muffled or muted with tc on.

You know, my stock HU in my Civic (and all 2006-08 Civics) are manufactured by Alpine, and it sounded absolutely sweet with my aftermarket amps. I couldn't agree more that Alpine makes a great product, I just hate the way they look.

When I went to purchase HU's, only the top end pioneer's had TC. Not sure if that is still applicable.

I love my P690UB. The usb functionality awesome, i have a small 40gb notebook drive tucked up under my dash feeding it, works flawlessly. (note: i'm not running the HDD off HU power, it has its own source) and its fully ipod compatible.

I recently bought the CDA-9885 over the 9883 -- mainly for the "biolite" display that I wasn't sure if it would be worth the price premium...and I'm very, very glad I did. It looks much better and easily visible even in the direct sunlight (I have a convertible.)

Just installed a Pioneer DEH-P6900UB in my Canyon - has a USB port that works GREAT with a bus-powered laptop hard drive. Browses easily through tons of music, and even support m3u playlists!

Does the unit take time to index the songs in the hd?
