Haven't seen a decent car thread in a while, just a lot of fru-fru crap, so I'm starting one.

Around here there is an odd disdain for "rice-boy's"
Now, first off, let me define what I think is a rice-boy. Someone who
a.) Respects the phenomenal enginering in many japanese automobiles
b.) has a basic understanding of the workings of these cars, and how to maximize its performance.

I do not consider the purple painted, neon-glowing, rear-winged car drivers rice boys. There is no need to call them anything more than what they are, morons.

So, that aside, I see an almost exact analogy between people who overclock their CPU's, and people who "overclock" their engines/cars.

Here's a correlation to dwell on.
Civics=Celerons
-widely thought to be a cheapo economy solution, those who know what thier doing can get some serious performance out of them.

anyway, your thoughts?

hmm...

person who puts "Type-R" sticker on domestic Acura = ricer
person who puts PIII case sticker on computer w/ P120 chip = ricer

person who tunes their Acura engine to get more horsepower = overclocker
person who tunes their Athlon to get more speed = overclocker

Overclocking isn't "ricing" up a computer it actually inhances the performance. My definition of rice is adding something to the car that DOESN'T enhance the performance, but just makes it "look" like a "racing" car. Added Intel or Athlon stickers to a Celeron processor would be ricing it up, IMO.

Your analogy doesn't work because you have incorrectly defined Rice Boy. A Rice Boy does NOT do anything to improve performance; that's the whole point of the designation.

Someone who soups up their 'puter for more speed = Overclocker

Someone who soups up their car for more speed = 'Motorhead'

There I go stuck in the '70's.

Haha, kinda unrelated to CPU speed, but I've met a few people (i.e. MORONS) who think that by setting their programs to use a T1 conn (Like Napster and some FPS games), they'll get T1 speeds, on a 56K!!!!! Ahhh....saddening isn't it?

I think it's a mix of Ricer/Stupididty...

The term rice is coined from Harley Davidson riders, disgusted by the wave of Japanese Harley look-a-likes.

Rice means to look like something it will never be.

Rice = Can't walk the walk only talk the talk. AKA All show no go.

If a riceboy has his civic doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, I don't really considerin him rice anymore

*sigh*

PS - I Think you guys would be surprised at who it was...

Ricers are those who ONLY put rims + exhaust tip on their 5hitboxes.
Or cover their stock cars with stupid stickers.

well, I guess we differ on our definition of riceboy.

also, Motorhead is a person who's into domestic cars, often classics/oldies.

C'mon people... Rice burner originated as a derogatory term for a Japanese car, rice being the food staple on that side of the world. Rice boy is just a variant of that to emphasize that most are little boys that "tweak" their cars simply because they don't know any better. I used to be into that a while back, but people were right when they said it was just a little boy stage that I will soon out grow.

I always thought that the equivilent of overclocking in the automotive world was stroking an engine out beyond its original size (i.e. stroking a 351ci Windsor motor to 427ci). That is some serious tweaking there. In many respects it is just as challenging as well. Finding the right combo of rods and pistons (sometimes crossing between manufacturers) to make the bore and stroke work together can be a challenge.

Ricers... All show... no go. At least that is my perception of the deal...

There is no such thing as an Asian built performance car. Sorry to those of that decent, but there isn't. Modifying those cars is like throwing a GF2 or Radeon on a P200... if the base product is nto any good, you are nto gonna get much more out of it with fancy add-ons.

At our school we call it "pimped out". Every other car out theier is a "pimped out" civic. They arn't even creative about it. They are all lowered with new rims and a large noisy muffler.

futuramatic, you said..

"There is no such thing as an Asian built performance car"

Sigh, you are a naive little boy. Just because it is something you know nothing about does not make it non-existant.

Futuramatic,

Your just plain ignorant. A Nissan Skyline GTR will DUST any muscle car from the 60's. It has been said, the Skyline is Japan's Porsche's 959. 0-60 4.9 seconds, quarter mile in under 14.

An Acura NSX is a work of art. It may not be the fastest, but it is considered an exotic car. 0-60 5.2, top speed 176mph.

A Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo has an amazing 280HP, will accelerate faster than any muscle car, stop in a shorter distance, hold the road better, and just plain makes any muscle car look old. 0-60 5.3 seconds, top speed 155mph, GOVERNED

Don't forget about the last generation of RX-7s, not the fastest, but one of the most well rounded sports car. 0-60 5.3, 158MPH top speed

Oh...did I forget the Toyota Supra Twin Turbo? I believe I almost did! Can you say 0-60 5.3 seconds, 155mph GOVERNED?

You big schlack, don't make me open up a can o whoop ass on you...

"Rice" originated with those high revving Japanese motorcycles.. i.e. rice rocket. Rice boy was applied to those silly little Japanese cars with coffee can exhausts, combat kits (FUGLY body kits), wheels that slow the car down (heavy 18" wheels.. can drop 1/4 mile times a few tenths), etc. Most rice boys will tell you that Honda uses "high tech" DOHC on their engines. If high tech is something that originated in the 40s (maybe earlier), then so be it. They get 100 HP/liter. Big whoop. They got a 1.6L engine and about zero torque.

Basic understanding of how a car works? Yea, Push that bright red "ENGINE START" button on the dash and the car goes. Pretty amazing.

supergroover:
hell yes...I happen to have a 95 civic that, if you look at it, was lowered, tinted windows, and 17" momo arrows on it. People think it is just for looks. With a drag turbo kit, del sol 160hp motor, 50 hp nitrous kit, quaife differential, and god knows how many sway and stress bars...I eat most stock muscle cars alive, even with a fully dynomated (I LOVE DYNOMAT) inside and my ever-changing stereo components. But the key is that to me the car has class...if I did the same to a caviler it just wouldnt be the same.

I drove an NSX, and it is VERY fast...but the way the car felt was what it was all about. Speed is not defined by how fast you do a 1/4 mile, but how far you can push the car...just like a processor. I feel like I got the most bang for my buck! I did a lot of research and just cannot afford a faster car (not only payments but also insurance kills my ticket-magnet self) and wouldnt trade what I have until I wrap it around a tree.
