Am purchasing a new machine 1.2g TBird comes with Voodoo5550 am afraid of 3DFX going belly up and possible lack of future driver support and also the rather dull performance of the 3dfx 5500. I have other card options. What would be my best choice from the following
ASUS v6600 GeForce 32mb Pure Deluxe
Creative 256 DDr Annihilator Pro Geforce 32mb
Geforce2MX 32mb?

Strange problems. You even have not tried out that Voodoo5 and You start to complain. First try it and then complain. I have it and I think it is a great card, at least You will not have to complain about subpar 2D. And most todays 3D games run on it just excellent.

You shouldn't be afraid of the V5 letting you down on the performance side, and especially not on the visual side. V5 has plenty of power and eye candy for the current generation of games.

I can honestly say that I've never seen games look so good as when they were running on my V5. Crossing off the V5 cuz it only gets 80 fps while another card can do 150 is silly. If you have concerns about tech support and driver support ... well, now you're being realistic.

The V5 is a dead end card. I hate to say it, but it's true. My V5 5500 was rock solid stable in every OS I use. The 2D and 3D were excelent. 3dfx anti aliasing makes games look increadible.

It's a frigg'n crime that 3dfx went under. IMO the V5 was the best of the last generation of vid cards, but with no future support for it, it's a waste of money.

Wadda ya gonna do in 2 months when you bring a new game home only to find your new V5 can't run it cuz it needs a driver update? Hope Nvidea releases new drivers for it?

Your best bet from the list of options you have is the MX card. Visually, it's not as nice as the V5, but it should last longer than the first gen Geforce cards

odd thread! you have not listed a card as good or better than the V5 to replace it! never mind about 3dmark scores, which have yet to represent more than one or two games in the real world so far. maybe the V5 is not the dull one but Strite instead- Strite maybe gets off more on the kind of card than the games he plays.

TBickle you are right I am concerned about "kind of card" I purchase prior to actually using one. Is this not what we learn while at the feet of the Master Anand? Are you infering his vcard or other product reviews are bias? In my "odd thread" it mentions I have NOT made my final purchase. Just wanted some insight prior to having to learn through the back pocket. Thanks for your wisdom and comic relief. I was not slamming your 3dfx card or the company's past merits. Alot of people, myself included frankly are feeling betrayed.

well I'm sorry if your English does not convey the impression you intended! if you can still change your choice of card go for a GTS of a reputable brand maybe.

stick with the voodoo:

1 - its a peice of history now, collectors item later.
2 - the performance of the card is excellent and FSAA is the best.
3 - 2D image on the voodoo cards is outstanding - league above geforce based.
4 - drivers were very mature before 3DFX went belly up.

i have had a GTS, voodoo3, matrox G400 - the voodoo3 is now the card in my machine - not the fastest, but the most versatile, and along with the G400, has crystal clear 2D.

A.If your an online FPS kinda guy(raw speed needed)stay away from the V5 it's not its strong point. If this is what you need or want or if having high 3D# scores are important its not your card.

B.If you find yourself in games looking at the graphics and kinda hanging out in sections just to... "check it out" or If you mainly do Flightsims with high eyecandy value as well as some racing sims it may be an option.

3.What I dont get is it comes with it? Does that mean your going to purchase the other card above and beyond the V5,if your going to get it anyway you might as well try it before you spend extra $$$$.

On the other hand if these cards are "pay a little more and get.." options see A. and B.
Anouther thing if it is a build up option, just how much more is it for those options?

They are right, I the lowest possible card I would go down to is a Geforce2 MX. For $79, you cant go wrong with that, everything else is to old of chipsets and to slow. SOme people dont know that 3DFX is dead, not to mention, have always been slower than NVIDIA cards. So thinking about getting a 3DFX card is a waste of time. They will not have future driver support as far as I know, so... Creative Geforce1(aka 256 sdr/ddr) is a good card, its just, you can get a Geforce2 MX for about same price...which is faster.

My vote goes to the Radeon DDR LE. It is cheaper than most Geforce2 MX's @only $85 shipped at www.newegg.com, and it beats the MX fairly well in everything except for low resolution and 16 bit color. The DVD playback and 2d image quality is one of the best, and the 32bit performance is really great for it's price. (You will have to do a little bit of tweaking to get the card to run optimally).

coupled with a 1.2 Gig TBird..the 5500 will slap silly all of the cards you mentioned. It loves high-end CPU's.

If you can get a GTS or a Radeon DDR, then go for it, the only reason being that 3dfx driver support is mostly dead.

I personally have a 5500, and love it to death. With FSAA, great 2d, and the lodbias slider, it is the best looking graphics card out there for 99.9% of the games on the market. Future game support is the only issue, as driver support is hurting. There may be a game coming out sometime soon that'll make me want to upgrade, but presently, the games I play, the 5500 rules.
