That is me as well, and it's a big reason why I've seen only one concert in almost 20 years. At this point I'd much rather go see artist playing smaller joints, even acoustic sets, rather than some big production where nobody has any idea of whether they are hearing live or "memorex" (reference for you old people ) Some people see "live music" as entertainment and it doesn't matter. Hell you could replace artists with lookalikes in costumes and most people wouldn't care as long as they dance around and the crowd cheers. Fair enough. I mean, tribute bands make a ton more than cover bands that play a variety of music, which has always been odd to me as it's much harder to pull off a variety of stuff. You want to make money as a cover musician, go tribute if you can.

Our band's drummer plays occasionally in a big Pink Floyd tribute and he makes triple what he does with us. And--half the time he says they just play drum tracks to the audience (and/or guitar, and/or vocals) and he just bangs along on stage playing a part that only he can hear, and doing his part to "look live".

The artists are up against it, even little cover bands like mine. Truly live performances aren't going to sound like album tracks but more and more, people expect a full polished album sound. Sucks, but might as well rail against the waves coming in wrecking your sand castle. You can vote with your dollars and that's about it.

Hell I even strongly dislike those harmony pedals that people use to generate multi-part harmonies, but at least someone is singing one part with those

I don't think most people are going to see Cardi B for her live singing voice. Honestly, if they were just up front and honest about it I don't think people would even give a shit about Milli Vanilli style total sham (where they didn't even sing it in the studio).

That's not to say there aren't performers that you would want to go see specifically for their live vocal abilities (or other musical skills), but plenty that isn't the appeal for.

Honestly, I don't get how hung up people are on all these very outdated forms of entertainment, to the extent that they still make a fuss when things don't follow whatever their version of that should be. Live music, stand up, etc. I feel like people box themselves in so much by limiting their thinking of what is possible.

Wow, it's not hard to find some schmuck to actually play covers on an acoustic guitar.
Its even less hard to find someone to press play on a computer.

I used to feel that way when I was a teenager, before I started going to concerts.
Now that I've seen bands that sounded nearly identical to the album, with minimal crowd interaction, those ones are the ones that make me feel like I would have been better off staying at home and listening to the album.

I think that's a fair point. I personally can't stand how much live music is in very poor acoustic areas though.

I personally think it's pretty sad that live music would be considered an "outdated form of entertainment." I don't disagree, my band doesn't just play older stuff, we play some songs from the 00s but largely younger people don't give a shit. Older people will watch and listen intently, make requests, dance etc. Well, it's their world moving forward and they'll make of it what they want. For now we are booked up into next year so I don't worry about the future of music and all that.

I play with a bunch of people in their 20s and early 30s, and the bulk of what we play is old time/Americana, so skews towards much older music.
The crowd themselves are on the younger side too. But it's a bit of an unusual venue and unusual patrons...

The live shows I've been too lately seem to have a mix of older and younger folks and everyone seems really into it. A few years back I did go to a really small punk rock show in the back room of a bar and the crowd was atrociously bad. All of them were younger kinda hipster looking kids and were barely moving, basically just standing there staring indifferently at the stage. It was a shame too because it was a good show, should have been some moshing but there wasn't.

I know this is a sign of ageing... But music is friggin crap today. No talent, some dude with no life experience and no vocal talent what so ever talks into an autotune, some producer whips it up, they market a brand around the guy and woooops, it hits the charts.

It's crap.

Yeah you have to watch out with statements like that (not that I really disagree). I remember my dad railing on abou the "rap fad" and that he hoped it would go away soon. And I'm sure his dad was doing the same about no-talent rock and rollers crowding out the big bands etc

There's still some amazing live stuff being done--even some of the tech is pretty cool, I really like what some people do with looping on the fly. They not only have to play the parts, they have to be good at the looping part to make it all work in time. That's a far cry from someone mashing a button and "instant band"

Some of the tech like autotune and soon AI is definitely removing the need for talent though. Shit, Adele apparently caught grief on some recent single for not using autotune, and people were complaining about the sound. One of the better pop singers today and people think it sounds weird when it's *not* autotuned....gross.

Excellent point! I absolutely love Kraftwerk, but there are only a few other things that are less engaging than one of their concerts...

To be fair, there always was. Though tech surely makes it easier.

Just look up the disco duck video and know that this was a huge hit. Don't blame me for any issues that might result.

Even I know who she is, and I'm so out of touch with pop culture that I might as well be from another planet.
She made a big "splash" with the tune about her "wet ass pussy". I also just recently read that she's one of the top earners on Only Fans. I don't recall where I saw that, so treat it as hearsay.

How's a 70 yo man know more about pop culture than the rest of you lot?
