The FBI is probing the St. Louis Cardinals for hacking into the internal databases of ​longtime division rival Houston Astros to steal player information, sources told The Post on Tuesday.

Calling the sensational allegation a case of “industrial espionage,’’ a federal source said the bureau is investigating whether the scheme was part of a “retaliation’’ plot against former Cardinal​s​ ​executive Jeff Luhnow, who jumped ship to the Astros in 2011.

While with the Cardinals, Luhnow helped construct an internal computer network ​called “Redbird” ​for the team to house its baseball-operations information. The data included higher-ups’ discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports.

Investigators believe that some members of the Cardinals organization feared that Luhnow took some of that proprietary data with him when he defected to Houston, the source said.

To be fair (and I am NO Cardinals fan AT ALL), the Astros were hardly ever a "rival" when they were in the NL Central. They were the perennial punching bag of that division (unless the Brewers extra-sucked in a given year)

That being said, this is CRAZY if/when it's proven true. And if it is, then I'm willing to bet it will be played off as some "rogue employee without owner/management approval..." bullshit.

35 votes per person. When you're a small market team doing well, the people "rock the vote" Large markets like NYC, LA etc do historically crappy in such voting as the bulk of their fans base just doesn't care.

Milwaukee was always good at stuffing the ballot boxes as well (not this year though, as the team is completely off the rails)

Scouting reports. Offensive tendencies. Trade talks. Contract negotiations. Baseball is a stat driven sport and teams have taken HUGE steps to crunch numbers and derive their own analytics.

No. Re-read the article(s). That's not 'the hack' they're saying that is sort of the impetus of the hack. Trick is define "proprietary data" in this instance... I mean the guy helped design and implement the Cardinals database(s). I'd venture to believe that when he went and set up shop in Houston, their database(s) are going to strike an uncanny resemblance to what St. Louis has in place.

You're on. As bad as the Brewers season has been, they can't touch the Phils for lack of talent. And that's before they unload Hamels, Papelbon, Harang, and any other vet on the roster they can get something for.

They really should just DFA Ryan Howard. They're dreaming if they think that, even if they pay almost all of his salary, any other team would give them anything for him. He's a nice guy who had some killer early seasons, but now, after injuries and the shift, he's just a big, musty load.
