Career choice: What would you choose?

Hey folks,

I'm kinda in a career dilemma rite now. Need to choose a path and specialty somehow I've been in my current company for 3+ years doing lots of SQL, JavaScript (serverside) and recently on Java. Some top mgmt fellas have identified that .NET is the way to go for future development. Since I've always favoured Java/Unix, I don't see any progress path any longer. However, since I have been in a MS shop for 2 years before I jumped ship, I'm comfortable with either platform.

It boils down to 2 choices, if I do jump ship, I'll lose my seniority. If I don't, I'll have to be re-learning .NET all over again; after 3 years

What would you choose in terms of career path?

Well, if you don't jump now, but decide to later, you'll be starting at a new place, but you won't have those years of seniority. i.e. if you start working at a new place now, rather than 2+ years from now, you'd have 2+ more years of seniority at this place.

Do you see yourself at your current job for the rest of your life? Or would you be willing to use it as a reference for other, better jobs?

Definitely not the rest of my life, but I'd want to pickup more technical knowledge b4 I jump coz what I've been doing isn't really mainstream i.e. difficult to get a job. Since Java/J2EE is outta the question, I'd figure why not ramp up on .NET knowledge and skills for the time being and then when the time is right, see what's others have to offer. That way, I don't get to lose my seniority... I hope.

Sounds logical?

even if you stick with the java, you wont be using it your whole career anyways. the point is, in this industry you have to be versatile and willing to learn or relearn technologies.

how does the money, the commute, teh work environment compare? thats what i would be waging the decision on, coding is coding

HardcoreRobot: Thanks for bringing up that point. You're absolutely correct. The IT industry is ever changing. There are lots of pple I know who just can't be proficient in both platforms. However, some pple might say that I lack *focus* if I were to divert my focus like a ping-pong ball If I were to get a new job, it would be somewhere rather inconvenient i.e. city center (UGH). I wouldn't know the pay.. YET though

Whatever you do, do it for yourself, meaning, start your own business. Why spend your life making someone else rich?

Stick with Java and Unix. MS .NET and windows will always keep you in or one step away from IT hell. Theres always better work in bigger systems.
