Me too, don't know why and it seems to happen subconsciously. I know I use both pronunciations, probably evenly, yet I could not say why I use both. Silly me.

I think you're on to something there, but it's reversed for me. I think I tend to say Car i be an when it ends a sentence. It sounds more final, and makes a good stop. Car ib ean has a better flow, and goes well in the middle of a sentence.

I prefer the William Shatner pronunciation: care-IH-bee-YAN

It's named after the Carib Indians, so it should technically be Car-ih-BEE-yan. However I usually say CA-RIB-e-yan because of Kermit the Frog.
