Exactly.

Carmack is saying if you build a card to meet the MINIMUM for DX9 spec, its not going to run DX9 very well. NVIDIA did this, made it so the FX series simply supported DX9, but flew on DX8. The NV40 will be the 1st true DX9 card imho.

But thats all speculation.

What ATi did was design a powerful shader platform the first time around. That had no trouble running DX9 on the default DX9 codepath (ARB2?).

I said this already in another thread

" I am just gona wait for Nvidia to release a pure 9x card ... no biggy really."

Everyone is so going nuts over a game that is running on a platform that is brand spanking new. Woooo ATI is better... and if my judgment serves me right that will last all of a few months at the most. ... the way these new cards and chips are being released at ... I expect a new Nvidia FX version in about a month max, that will par up or even surpass ATIs mark.

Why should you have to wait for a new FX version. The curernt FX is a DX9 card and should run games at about the same speed as a Radeon. But given that NVIDIA skimped on the specs, you get poor performance.

Sure, a revamped core would fix the performance issues, but it seems as though ATI's 1 year old core is tackling things just fine.

Finnkc, right now I'm starting to think that is wishful thinking. I was a prior nVidia owner but now I'm starting to believe nVidia had its moment with DX 8 and the ti4200 series (that had piss poor AA/AF support btw), and now that moment is over for nVidia.

People glamorize nVidia because of their name and name only. Their driver support for DX8 games where solid needless to say, but the looks of it so far, Dx9 looks shady for them.

I think just because a company pushes a product like the GF4, does not make them god of the video graphics world.

Like NFS4 state, why wait? Vary your purchasing decisions between more than one company. Don't stick with one product just because of their company's name. I also think it's very rudimental for people to say: Why base your purchasing decision of a Ati card on a game that's not even out to the public yet. However then say " I would rather wait for the new NV40", which is even months away without any real details published yet. You have no idea what the Nv40 has to offer yet, except that cards prior to it obviously show lack of any support for today's new games.

I guess nvidia either just didn't have the resources to make a full fledged DX9 part, or didn't think it neccessary to do so. However, that didn't stop them to proclaim full DX9 support even though its DX9, or in particular PS2.0 shaders aren't particularly fast. This marketing move was to entice more people to buy it on the pretext that it was fully DX9 capable and "future-proof". When the public finds out about its shortcomings(which is now) it would've been too late since many would've already bought it. While it would leave a slight bitter aftertaste on many consumer's tongues, they're banking on their next release to sweeten things up and gain back their reputation, and I have little doubt that they would. Business as usual...

Do you buy a video card to run benchmark progs or to immerse your self in a fantasy world. There are TOO many great games to be missing waiting on the next whatever chip.
Perfect example- concoles: the gamecube rocks with specs that are worse than both ps2 and xbox. Hummm, ATI was in that box too. Go figure. I still want to replay MaxP with every thing on, gothic2, homeworld2,B.HawkD, and splinterCell BEFORE hl2 is released.

How will NV40 be the first true DX9 card? What do you call R3XX? And are you assuming that nVidia beats ATi to the punch by releasing NV40 before R4XX?

I see my story on the main page nvidiots say it's a fake. The almighty carmack would never say such a thing and the new wonder card which nobody has seen will murder ati looks like 3dfx part 2.

I meant post. The reason I started this post was every Nvidot was bashing gabe saying valve cheated for ati. Now we have carmack saying the fx sux for dx9, and on d3 ati is just as fast with full iq as nvidia with " The special path ". By the way nfs4 post is funny as hell.

The precision doesn't really matter to Doom...
Uh, wtf... Wasn't Carmack the one bitching for 128bit color and other crazy stuff? Or is this just because DoomIII is designed around GF4 style hardware? I can never keep track of this guy.
