They need to design a little better redundancy into these cruise ships. I am not talking military specifications. Something along the lines of redundant fully isolated engine rooms so in the event that one is knocked completely out they can still limp home using the other one. With cruise ships getting so large 100,000+ tons and so many people on-board they need to have redundant systems.
The problem isnt the engines. The engines reportedly are okay as the fire suppression kicked in immediately. The problem is once the fire suppression goes off, they have no way to suppress another fire if it were to happen again. They are hesitant to turn the engines back on, because if another fired happened, the entire ship, crew and passengers would go up in flames.
If the engines were fucked up, all cruises for the next 3 months(minimum) would be canceled.
Edit: Looks like they have canceled two months out. Originally it was just two weeks. I guess it was more serious that they originally let on. Sucks to be Carnival CLL, the parent company. Concordia last year. A fire last fall and now this.
