The CPU is competitive with Broadwell core i3, but not i5 and it has fastest iGPU performance of any Ultrabook.

Does that look like an Ultrabook to you? It's got a flipping DVD drive in it! It's huge!

The reviewer should be more cautious in his comparisons with the competition..

That s all good to rate Carrizo in respect of BDW, but the comparisons are not apple/apple.

I guess that he has trouble with power measurements when it comes to Intel products, to start with why using lower formats than the tested item for his comparisons.?.

Using a 14" for the i7 is just bias from the start, while the direct competitor, the 5200U in a Medion Akoya, wasnt even benched, they used scores harvested here and there..

My god, it comes with a discrete gpu. That defeats the whole purpose of the platform. Since its an AMD gpu, it is going to wreck power consumption, it probably even draws power when the thing is not being used. So even though they did a good job measuring system power consumption, I cant trust the numbers until I see one without that stupid discrete gpu. Still waiting for a real review of a real carrizo notebook...

Can someone just go buy this notebook for $429 and review it properly?

I'm thinking of buying it myself. But I need to know how difficult it would be to add another stick of RAM, and which type of RAM to use, etc.

That s the 17" version, they ended dismounting it at NBC..

Edit : The cooling device encompass both APU and dGPU, so it is adequate to cool an APU at more than 15W if the dGPU is left unused.

That looks like a pretty nice laptop.

P.S. It does list 8GB RAM in the specs, so I bet it has 2 x 4GB DIMMs.

It actually says on the web page that it is 1x8. Office Depot is one of those rare B&M sites that actually lists meaningful specs.

And if you verify the model number via HP, it has 1x8GB, so for another $45, you could have 16GB.

I have to say that it looks like they have given up a bit of GPU strength for better CPU performance. The gaming benchmarks show the Carrizo R6 not even matching the previous Kaveri R7, and it gets worse as you move up in resolution/quality. Looks like a case of taking two steps forward and one step back (which is ultimately one step forward, so not a complete loss).

This will be a tough sell. For the same price of the HP 17-g054ng ($660US) you can get an i7-4712MQ+GT940M and $680US will get you an i7-5500U+GT940M+1080p that will completely destroy the 8700P+R7 360M. HP's pricing is way, way out of line (or AMD's is).

I thought thats because carrizo is using half the power vs kaveri? Of course since there are hardly any real kaveri notebook reviews it is really hard to tell.

Like you said, without a proper comparison, a proper review, that makes it hard to know for sure. Since every other component of the notebook (screen, disk, RAM, etc.) is still consuming the same amount of power, I'm guessing overall battery life doesn't change all that much. It's not like Intel suddenly went from 3 hours to 9 hours in one tick or tock...

Another big question I have about these notebooks is... HDMI 2.0 output? Decoding 4K natively without much power consumption is AWESOME, but it's not that great if you can't view it on a big screen. The additional bit rate is great for improving overall picture quality at lower resolutions, but an external viewing option would be great...

Where did you read, that the dGPU is active while there is nothing to do, esp. on DC power?

And it should be easy to switch it off.
