Yea, but different types of race cars are awesome when it comes to selling them.

From a merchandising POV the movie is brilliant.

There were 16 major characters in the first movie. This one has 33.
That provides them with a LOT more cars toys to sell to kids.

This movie really is nothing more than Pixar selling out to make money. Sad, but reality.

Hey man, they got to find the money somewhere to finance their new addition, and the city park that they promised the town of Emeryville in the agreement to let them relocate there.

I really don't begrudge Pixar anything like this, b/c they've well-established their movie-making integrity. They're just down the street from me, and I'd love to see them pump some money into their little island community surrounded by the filthy ocean that is Oakland.

$68M at the box office the first weekend. Problem critics??

IMO opening weekend is usually more a factor of how good the previous movie was (in the case of sequels) or how good the hype was. Think of how many sequels you went to just because the last one was so good... would you have skipped it knowing what you know now? I would have skipped x-men 3, spider man 3, Quantum of Solace, and others.

Except that its gotten good reviews by movie goers too.

Looks like you were wrong. 68m the first weekend is far from a flop.

Box office performance isn't the only thing that makes a commercial success. In fact when we're talking kid's movies it's probably a very small part of it. This will sell a ton of toys, clothes, eventually DVDs/blu-rays... etc. Just like the first one did.

Did you completely ignore what I said about merchandising? The dude I was responding to named Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich as if to suggest Cars 2 will somehow be as successful in theater as Transformers or 2012, when that's simply not going to happen, as terrible as they all may be, because Cars simply doesn't appeal to nearly as diverse of a movie going audience.

I never said the franchise wasn't going to make money hand over fist, just not the film.

Some people will go to see a sequel no matter how bad it is, we'll see just how much it tanks in the following weeks before we truly mark down where this one lands. I think Pixar will be lucky if Cars 2 beats Cars 1's $461,983,149 gross ticket revenue, which is pretty low for a Pixar film to begin with.

Could the bad reviews also be attributed to how the critics are viewing the movie? Is it possible that yes, the movie might not be as enjoyable for adults, but the kids still love it? Although, almost all of PIXAR's previous films have been very adult-accessible, so I guess it's not completely off-base to complain about Cars 2 just not hitting the mark with adults.

Whatever you say man... all I'm trying to say is that they're still going to make a bunch of money one way or the other.

I loved it. I loved the attention to detail. The DB5 sounded like a DB5, the F1 car sounded like an F1 car and the jabs at nascar for going in circles and f1 car for being fragile. Well done.

I'm jumping in here without reading the thread, but I think critics might be getting tired of the pixar thing. At first it was fresh and new, but now it's getting stale and boring. I watched Toy Story 3 recently and thought it sucked, though it got good reviews. Maybe this is the end

Toy Story 3 was probably as close to perfection as Pixar could get. They could have not made a better movie to close out the Toy Story franchise.

Pixar movies have all had heart and real emotion (haven't seen Cars 2 yet so I can't speak for it) and I don't think that's something that people are going to tire of. Up, Wall-E, Toy Story 3 were the previous three Pixar movies and arguably the best three they have made. If someone does not care for these three, then I think they have misremembered how much they liked Pixar movies in the past.

People change, and people's taste in movies change as well but Pixar's quality has not (again, don't know about Cars 2 yet).

I liked Wall-E quite a bit, but disliked Up very much. Have not seen any of the Toy Story films and likely never will.

I think some of the movies are decent for the cartoons they are, but people seem to hold Pixar on some sort of crazy pedestal for reasons I will never understand. I suppose it used to be like that with Disney back in the day, so maybe it's just a matter of putting out something palatable and relatable at the right place and time.

I know this is an old thread, but I did not want to start a new one on the same topic.

My wife and I took our grand kids to see cars 2 last night, and it was pretty bad.

The plot of way over the head of the targeted audience. My grands kids, who can usually watch the original cars, were not interested. The only time the movie seemed to catch the attention of the kids was when towmater was on the screen.

On top of the over done plot, I think the gun play was a little too much for a kids movie. Who in their right mind puts gun scenes in a kids movie?

My wife and I walked out about an hour into the movie.

I saw it with my son (4) on Sunday. I thought it was a good movie, but only average for a Pixar movie. There's usually a strong connection between the audience and the characters in Pixar films, and I felt like that bond was lacking here.

Nonetheless, the attention to detail and imagery was superb, and the little homages to the original Cars and the Cars shorts were fun too. I also was surprised by the amount of violence in this movie (especially relative to the original which had none at all).

My son loved the movie (no big surprise there).

i frankly had no idea that the toys of the first cars movie were that lucrative guess the little kids just love it.
second movie is supposed to be better, but i found the first to be mediocre, pixars worst so i'm not in any rush to see this.

The first 5 minutes of Toy Story 3 was better then the entire cars 2 movie (or at least the hour that I sat through).

I feel bad saying it, but toy story 3 sucked. I don't remember the first and never saw the second. I liked wall-e and up. Ts3 was unfunny and the plot was just creepy.
