Newegg is selling the Corsair Value Select CAS 2.5 for $49
and the CAS 3 for $51.

How come the 2.5 is cheaper ? Isn't it better?
The Manufacturer's part number is the same except the CAS 3 has "C3" tacked onto the end. Even the title of the description is identical - and both are "Retail".

Which should I get?

Thanks.

The CAS 2.5 is a lot better.

The difference between....

CL 2 and CL 2.5 --- Not too much
CL 2.5 and CL 3 --- A LOT MORE!

The reason why it's cheaper, is because the CL 2.5 chips are produced in a larger volume, shrinking the bulk production costs. Supply and demand.

A lot more in what? Not gaming, I notice no diff between CL2.5 and CL3 in real-world gaming and 3DMark05 gained about 10-11 3DMarks @ CL2.5.

3DMark05 is almost entirely GPU bound. Try running 3DMark01 or even 3DMark03, there will be a MUCH bigger difference in them.

I just bought a 1 gig (2x512) of Corsair VS from newegg last week when they had the sale. It's good stuff. Zipzoomfly.com also has the 2x512 kit on sale for 91.50 this week also.

I went through this about a week or two ago. Couldn't figure the diff either.

Funny thing, when I installed the ram, set it to "SPD" it came out as Cas 3.0?

You peeps who just bought the Corsair VS @ 2.5, have you confirmed its running at 2.5?

I set my down to Cas2.5, but couldn't pass memtest86 test #5 consistently so I ended up RMAing it anyway.

I see ram prices are finally settling in a trough. When I bought my 2 x 512mb Corsair VS DDR400 CL 2.5 last July, it cost me something like $280 Canadian.

There is no way to know the reason in this particular case, but prices aren't always determined by the grade, size, length, weight, speed, et. al. relative to other grades, sizes, lengths, weights, speeds, et. al.

The most likely explanation is supply and demand; there was a glut of CAS 2.5 chips relative to CAS 3.0 chips when Corsair purchased them, or Corsair found itself with an excess of CAS 2.5 modules relative to 3.0 and priced them accordingly.

Which should I get? The CAS 2.5 or 3?

You'll be lucky to get Cas2 or even 2.5 from the 3 stuff whereas CAS2.5 will hit Cas2 in a lot of cases @ default setting
