This is a little strip label printer for your computer. I first got one a couple of years for home, and liked it so much (and kicked myself for not getting a second one for work) that I bought a second one when this place put them on clearance.

I know that I just posted a bad deal from this outfit re: Sony / Apple 20" monitor, but I like this printer and think it's a great addition to your desktop setup. And yes, this is the place where I got my second one.

Think of the Brother P-Touch label printers, and you get the idea of the strip tapes this printer uses. It's nice because you use any True-Type font and type your phrase on the computer. Unlike the P-Touch, you cannot mix different fonts in the same label. Tape carts are a little more expensive and harder to find than a P-Touch, but if you've got access to Office Max/Depot, you can get replacement black-on-white tapes. (Other color combinations available from Casio on the web, but they are more expensive.)

You can use the printer w/o the mouse pad.

Here's their pitch......

Casio KLP1000 Label
Printer/ Mouse Pad

Create labels right at your desktop
with the Casio KLP1000 label printer.

Product Description:

Create labels right at your desktop with the Casio KLP1000 label printer. This small printer attaches to your mouse pad and is designed for easy and comfortable mouse operations. The mouse pad surface is angled to reduce wrist strain (great for those who spend a lot of time at the computer or are prone to carpal tunnel syndrome). A stopper on the back prevents movement of the mouse pad while the printer is in operation. When not in use, detach the printer and set aside.

You can design and make labels for binders, video cassettes, audio cassettes, files, lockers, shelves, and cabinets, plus name and address labels. Preset templates are included for your convenience as is a phrase library to select common expressions. The label printer offers three different printing methods and will support any language with True Type fonts. Up to three lines can be printed on 18-millimeter tape. A time stamp allows you to record the current date and time on your computer. If you want to transfer information, you can highlight text from Microsoft Word, Excel, a Web page, or your e-mail, and input the text on the labels.

This is a pretty nice little printer.

Unlike the Brother P-touch type printers, this one will handle any font your PC has.

Just beware, the replacement ribbons for this run around $15 each at Staples/Office Depot, etc. I would buy a couple of printers at this price just for the replacement ribbons. Unfortunately, I just bought a new ribbon about 2 weeks ago, and we don't really use this printer a whole lot.

how exactly do u print? comes with some sort of printer drivers, has it's own proprietary software?

OK, remember, you asked for it.

When you run the installation program (like most other Windows programs) you get a new program group in your start menu ( or program group of your choice). You can also install a running system tray icon.

Left-click on the icon to type in (or Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V text from another program) text with the last font settings.

Right-click on the icon, where you get five choices, "Control Panel", "Input Panel", "Properties", "Help" and ""Exit."

"Control Panel" enables a floating toolbar with six buttons,

  1. "Print",
    "Feed",
    "Append",
    "Show/Hide Input Panel",
    "Properties"[/b] and
    "Help".

  • "Print" opens a preview "Input Panel" with whatever text you have in the buffer in the last font you used, with the option to print or cancel.

    "Feed" sends a tape feed command to the printer (useful when you change tape carts and want to make sure the tape is exiting the printer properly.)

    "Append" works in two different ways - it appends new text in your Ctrl-C buffer to the existing text in an open Input Panel, or when the Input Panel is closed, it overwrites the current text in the input panel.

    "Show/Hide Input Panel" shows the text input window on screen if it is not on screen, and hides the input text panel if it is on screen. I should add that the programs toolbar and input screen are ALWAYS on top and cannot be hidden by switching to another open program.

    "Properties" opens a Label Printing Properties window, there are 7 tabs,

    Printer where you select the printer (if you had more than 1 Casio printer, otherwise this drop-down box is useless), Print Density from in 5 steps from Light to Dark;

    Layout where you set the tape width, Font Size and Number of Lines (Automatic, Large/1 Line, Middle/1 Line, Middle/2 lines, Small/1 to 3 lines) and the Tape Length (presets for various VHS, 8mm, Mini-DV, Audio Cassette, Mini Disc, CDR-back, spine, Spine-s and 3.5 inch disk. You can force the printer to fix the tape length to one of these presets, force the printer to a manual setting (in mm), or turn off force, which allows the printer to print to the length of the text plus a generous margin;

    Format is where you select any TrueType font by font name active on your system. One shortcoming is there is no font style preview window, so you should have another utility which can show you WYSIWYG for the font style. There are two Text Layout options, "Word Wrap" and "Justify";

    Phrase is a storage area where you can store often-used phrases. You can copy, cut and paste between this window and your label input panel. The text you save here says until you delete it. It stays between reboots, so I suspect there is a Registry file which stores this text.

    Menu adds command to the "Label Printer Application" shortcut menu. I don't know where that is, and therefore haven't used it;

    Display allows toggle to "Show preview before printing", "Show Input Panel when Text is appended", and "Stop between prints for tape cut.";

    Finally, Operation controls whether to display the Label Printer Application shortcut menu on right-click, and whether to use the Ctrl, Shift and Alt keys in any combination with the right-click. (Hmmm... )

    "Help" runs the standard Windows Help for the printer application

"Input Panel" toggles the text input screen on and off.

"Properties" is a shortcut to the Label Printing Properties box described above.

"Help" is the Windows Help for the program.

"Exit." closes the system tray icon.

also, as for the labels, how many feet are included
Don't know, the packages don't say and neither do any of the office supply web sites. On the reel, the hub starts at 7/16" and the tape is wound to 13/16". And no, I don't have any idea of the thickness of the tape! ]:laugh:

what type of label rolls do they use
Casio. Labeled XR-9X-s for single tapes, XR-9X-2s for two-packs.

how much do refills usually cost
$13.00-15.00 single, $25.00-$27.00 double.

where are u guys getting them?
Office Max store and Office Depot store - with the Brother label tapes. Haven't found them on OM or OD stores.
