Epox 8kha+
XP 1800 B (not overclocked...what a waste right?)
512 MB PC2100
Built by ATI 9500 PRO
WinXP PRO SP1

Anyone else having issues with the new Catalyst drivers? I read some other posts where people had problems with game-specific issues, but I haven't heard of complete display annihiliation. Updated from 3.1's. Tried removing all traces of old drivers b/4 install through device manager and add/remove programs. After install computer crashes, comes back up several times with windows error messages saying "Windows detected and recovered from a device failure...reboot to restore full functionality." Now display will only work with generic VGA drivers, if it autodetects 9500pro have to go through the same crash routine. If anyone knows a place to post some online photos I could post the screenshots, but I don't know if that would be helpful for troubleshooting. Any and all suggestions welcome.

*bump* I have the same problem. Haven't had time this week to address it, so I'm running my old GeForce4 until the weekend.

For some ppl, cat3.2 is a godsend.
But for me, i dont like them, they lower my 3d mark scores, and make C&C Generals Run jerky, so i went back to Cat3.1.

Looks like I'll have to reformat to get it working right again. Like an idgit, I didn't make a restore point before installing the cat 3.2's (why do i continue to beleive that WHQL means anything). Rollback driver makes the problem worse, and a 'clean' (manual deletion of all ati drivers) install of 3.1's leaves my monitor a garbled mess. Luckily I can at least get to the desktop using a standard vga driver, but no gaming until I fix the problem. BTW, NWN is the only game on my rig right now, might that be causing the problem?

there is supposedly a problem w/ opengl games when using cat 3.2; ati knows about the problem and is trying to correct it. i dont really play too many opengl games, but one i know for sure that has probms is HL-CS (when using opengl). if the ESC is pressed the screen will blank forcing a manual reboot. hopefully cat 3.3 will correct these errors

btw rage3d and its forum is a great resource for ati specific questions/probs

I was having the exact same problem you are having but with a Sapphire Radeon 9100 128MB. Turned out my vid card was bad. I've got two machines here that had ATI cards in them. Both machines were running XP, one with DX9 installed, the other w/ DX 8.1. I tried using Cat's 2.3 through 3.2 on each machine. EVERYTIME I installed the 9100 card in either machine I'd get that error just after the XP Welcome screen appeared. With my other ATI card ( Radeon 32 DDR) installed I had no problems in either machine. The 9100 had been working just fine for weeks when one night while playing Serious Sam 2 it crapped out on me completely and I started getting the same error you're getting.

So if a newer CAT driver or a XP re-install doesn't fix the problem then I'm gonna say it's time for you to RMA that card.

i didnt have a problem installing them but i did have some problems with a few games, ie. Half life, and battlefield, and NWN, so i rolled back to the 3.1's and y installs usually work out fine i jsut ahe to go into the registry and delete the ati drivers, using the regcleaner interface its really simple.

Bad news JKing76, it looks like Choralone is right. I tried clean install of XP with DX8.1 with Cat3.1 and 3.2. I also tried DX9 and Cat3.1 which is what I was running before the meltdown (figuratively). I'm not sure what the manufacturers warranty is on the 9500pro...I should probably spend some quality time at the ATI website and find out what their return policy is. Thanks for all the input. I'll let you know how it goes with ATI.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system and don't run any background programs.

motherboard BIOS is the latest from the Epox support site for 8KHA+...I'm using the VIA 4in1's from the Epox website also...they're not the absolute latest (4.42 versus the 4.46 on via's website)...

Good luck with the RMA! Since you bought a Built by ATI card you will probably have to send the card directly back to ATI if Mwave won't take it back. I was still in my first 30 days (barely) with the place I bought my card at. Unfortunately, after they got my card back they said it would be 2 weeks before they would have the card fixed or a replacement card. Ugh! So I went out and ordered a Powered by ATI 9500 Pro that should be here today. Wish me luck!
