You could probably just cut it and switch some wires, but that might introduce some noise... there are people here who know more than me. so let them speak.....

Yeah, but the problem is I don't know which wires to cut and switch.
Here are the colors in order

white-orange-white-blue-white=green-white-red

The cable is made by Belkin and has
Belkin Components Compton CA #R7J304 E116394 4/PR 24 AWG
.
.
.
UTP CAT-5

Officeboy, I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean to cut off one of the head and reattach it flipped over the other way?

they make a connector where they crossed them internally. I bought them like $2 bucks or something from BUY.COM. You might find one at your local electronic store.

Ouch, I've cut the wiring and crossovered the cables but the two computers are still not seeing each other. The led on the two nics are on.

another question, I have a DVD-ROm and a CD-RW drive but since I've installed the isa nic, my computer no longer shows the CD-RW drive.

Probably your NIC and your CDRW is have an IRQ conflict. Check in Windows Device Manager and see if it reports any conflict.

For your network, you have to assign IP address and submask to each computer. Assign 192.168.0.1 to the 1st PC and 192.168.0.2 to the other. Then assign both submask to 255.255.255.0

Also assign each computer an unique name, and the same workgroup (spelling and case counts!).

I do believe it is IRQ conflict. For some strange reason, isa network cards never reports any conflicts in device manager. Guess I'll get some PCI nics now.

Yes, They make a little device that you can just plug the cat 5 cable into and it will cross the wires. It may be called a cheater hub if I remember correctly.

good grief... don't make this hard for the poor fellow.

This is a simple ethernet cable. it only uses pairs 1 & 2 and 3 & 6.

With the connector tab facing down,, look at the wires. Read the colors like a book (from left to right).
No on the other end cut the connector off, strip the wire and now reverse the wires 1&2 goto 3&6 on the other end and 3&6 go to 1&2.

if you need more help please email me.

Good luck

you can either make a new cable.

or buy an adapter.
--

i am hoping you did not spend more than $30 for each PCI NIC. you don't really have to spend the extra for 3com or intel...

Ahhhrrrgghh...darn it, I still can't get this network to work.
I purchased the cross-over cable, bought two pci nics, but when I click on network neighborhood and "browse network" I still get the message unable to browse network.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Under TCP/IP->D-link DFE-530TX PCI fast ethernet adapter
I've set the IP address to
192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

what can I be missing here? Still can't browse my network neighborhood, help

How about the computer names and workgroup? The computer names have to be different, and the workgroup have to be the same (case sensitive). Also what other protocols did you install other than TCP/IP?
