That had to be one of the most indescript posts ever, I thought you were talking about network cables at first. Is it that hard to write Cat 3.7->3.9?

Work fine for me, but next time I reformat I'm going to try the Omega's.

In most cases using drivers provided by windowsupdate = bad idea

How come?

I've never had a problem. They might not always be the newest, but I've found them to be uber compatible.

Shouldn't that be 4.0? As 3.10 is too close to 3.1 for the simple folk online....

Too close? How about equivalent? It's so retahded.

They're not equivelent.
For software version numbers it's always been
MAJOR_VERSION, MINOR_VERSION, BUGFIX_VERSION , buildnumber
Okay? Not that hard.
It's not common math where the last zero to the right of the decimal place is ignored.

Cat 3.9 upped the quality of 2D programs like the windows xp shell by a little bit. It seems sharper now.

Clueless. Those cats don't even support OpenGL.

Which ones? The Windows update or the Omegas? I am running IL2:FB just fine and I think I have it under Open GL.

You must have the open GL component, GL.dll from an older driver still on your system. They are interchangeable after all. here's what Terry Makedon, head of the Catalyst team had to say about this:

Makedon: "Nobody on (this board) should need this driver. It is the basic 7.94 driver (aka CATALYST 3.8) with no control panel and lots of features not there.

This driver was given to Microsoft so the non-enthusiasts can get a more stable driver than what they were using before. Lots of people never update their graphics drivers and in fact the vast majority of PC users dont even know what a driver is.

When we get drivers like this on Microsoft, it upgrades the mass majority's driver to something newer.

Many millions of people get their driver this way (instead of downloading it from ati.com)

Why do those packages never include hardware opengl?

You need to ask Microsoft that "

On of the Best external ATI beta testers and the guy who takes care of the buglist had this to say:
"There was a row over licencing several years ago and MS refused to bundle OGL support into their OS so you have to download it separately"

I agree. Especially with the monitor issues (which almost fried my $500 VP171b LCD ) I say that the Omega 3.7 is the current best release.

Okay, that's a ton of FUD right there. First of all, that alleged refresh rate bug which supposedly destroyed monitors was initially reported by 30-something people on a messageboard. Later, one person admitted to being 32 of those people.

Terry Makedon has asked for people to report to ATI any and all monitor deaths as a result of catalyst drivers so that they could examine the problem and find a solution.

They have yet to have one respondant.

Not one.

Second, you have an LCD. It doesn't have a refresh rate therefore it could not possibly be affected by this ficticious bug.

Another rumor which started by a lot of posters in different forums at the same time (all with very low post-counts BTW) was that of 3.8 causing temperature increases. Several investigations by completely third party hardware sites debunked this and found that the only drivers with even marginal heat increases were those from Omega.

There is a theory that all of these low-post count "sky is falling" FUD and mis-information spreaders were part of a larger smear campagne.

I don't know if that's true or not.

In any case, I'll ask you to stop spreading FUD which has been DISPROVEN and which could not possibly be true since you own an LCD.

Well I reckon I'm just simple folk then. Of course I ain't never had need for no book learnin' and all yer fancy ways.

I thought of it as more of a brand name version instead of like a driver where the convention you speak of is expected.

I can see that point too. I believe this is why the rumor exists that in january, the format will be moved over by a decimal place. At the beginning of this year, ATI didn't expect to release 10 drivers.

I had issues with the 3.7's but the 3.9's fixed them. I guess it just depends on your configuration what version of drivers work best for you. With all the games I play, the 3.9's haven't given me a problem.

I had a post similar to this a week or two ago. Basically I got my Viewsonic P95f+ and 9500pro at the same time and was disappointed in the image quality. I assumed it was the commonly associated "viewsonic blur." Then I went from 3.7 to 3.9 and suddenly the geometry was much better, and the blur was COMPLETELY gone. I cannot imagine a sharper picture than what I have now.
