Spoke with my wife this morning and we jointly decided to have Monroe put down today. He is absolutely miserable and has no prognosis of recovery. There is no sense is putting him through 2 months of hell for our sake (not his sake). Poor cat didn't move a muscle for almost 4 hours this morning, until my 1 year old started chasing him before we could pull her away.

One of the hardest decisions I've had to make in my life, that is for sure.

Oh, and fuck heart failure. Second time I've had to deal with it in one year.

Sorry about your loss. We had to put one of our cats down just a week ago at only 12 years old. Two weeks before that we had no idea she was sick. She quit eating for a couple days, my wife took her in and they found a mass.

I thought that my wife would drag this on, but when she took the cat in 3 days later for treatment, they said the mass had already doubled in size, and her abdomen was filling with fluid. Nothing could be done.

We still have two cats, one is 3, the other is 21. I'm afraid we will be dealing with this again soon.

I buried mine in the yard. I have one of my mother's next to the house with a sweet tombstone I made out of etched slate. That was a minor triumph for un-artistic me, but it took a tremendous amount of time.

On the face of it, I agree. It's one thing to be upset and distraught over the event. I agree the in-laws should have at least called (assuming they were reachable). To carry a seething grudge against your in-laws, when they obviously did the right thing for the poor animal is asinine, and very unfair to the spouse.

...or there's more to the relationship with the in-laws anyway.

I lost a kitty to heart failure the day after new years. I had to make the decision to let him go. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but it was the right thing to do. Sorry for your loss.

You did the right thing OP. It was the cat's time to go; holding it off any longer would have been selfish, and cruel toward the cat.

As a fellow cat-lover, I too understand how it feels to put down a beloved pet. My condolences.

Yup, you did the right thing. It doesn't make it any easier. But it's about the quality of life of the cat. Sorry you had to go through that, I've gone through it too many times, but love having cats/dogs around and realize they have a very limited time on earth, and try to make it the best for them, as they do for me.
