I observed my wife's cat kill a bird today. It was quick but evidently painful for the victim, judging by the cry. I have to say, it was slightly disturbing.

This cat is healthy, well fed and has a wonderful personality in his dealing with us humans.

Are cats evil? Murderers in disguise.

My girl cat is a good mouser, or would be if she had the killer instinct. She just like playing with them cause they move. It's still useful. We make a good team. She helps me locate the mouse, and corral it in a confined space, and I live catch it. Me and mousey then go for a long walk, and I let it go

Cats kill for no apparent reason. I can't remember where I saw this, but it was something like Nature on PBS, where they tracked this well fed cat outdoors and he killed like 70 small animals in a week. Didn't eat them, just stalked and killed them. He even killed a rabbit.

Cats are just too close to their wild ancestors in their instincts. Unlike dogs which have had most of that stuff bred out of them, cats will still hunt regardless.

My old cat was a great hunter of mice and birds. Even with a bell on, she was a silent killer. With her around we never had a rodent problem.

Clearly something needs to be done otherwise these hate crimes will continue to happen.

Its the basic instinct, they are hardwired to do that. Just like guys and jacking off, although you are not making babies, you feel an incessant need to seed...

Same for our old cat but we never placed a bell around her.

Although she really only hunted outside and didn't care about the mice in the house but she loved to eat only the heads of the mice / birds she caught in her last few years and leave the rest for us to clean up.

Cats don't play with prey.

Cats kill their prey by delivering a neck bite that severs the spinal cord. To do this, they must temporarily release the prey to get at the nape of the neck, but when they do so, they risk the prey escaping or counterattacking. Small animals will defend themselves if they get the chance. Mice, rats, and other rodents can deliver a vicious bite, and birds can peck. A cat has a very short muzzle, and to get close enough to apply the neck bite, she risks injury to her eyes and face from the prey.

A cat will “play” with her prey to tire it out in order to reduce the risk of injury to herself, but she is not actually playing in the human sense. She is simply doing the job that her instincts tell her she must do in order not to starve, and protecting herself in the process. If the prey is lively, the cat could suffer a serious bite that might become infected and lead to death. Only when the prey is sufficiently tired and dazed is the cat able to make the kill.

Dispose of the cat? Good idea.

Yes,that is exactly what I meant.......

Kill the cat for being a cat,how about you neuter yourself and not breed ?

Thanks for sharing your wisdom, now go back under the bridge.

My two cats probably get a bird a week. I should start throwing out bird seed in the yard to make it easier on them. If only I could teach them to get only doves, feather them, and stick them in the freezer for me.

A few weeks ago I watched "Walking with Prehistoric Beasts." My cat sat on the couch with us and watched the episode where a sabre-toothed cat (her ancestor) killed and ate an Australopithecus (our ancestor). She looked very satisfied as this all played out.

My cat just sits on my window sill all day sleeping or asking to be let inside... which never happens.

my cat is an awesome hunter this was neat to see:

and even after it was dead....he spent no less than 2 hours playing with it, dropping it on one side of a lilac bush, going around to the other side and attacking it over and over again.
